Handgun transfer from mainland

I'm sure this has been answered a 100x so I apologize in advance....

If I'm buying a handgun from a private seller on the mainland where they do not require a state permit can I have the seller ship the handgun directly to Hawaii FFL or do they need to use an FFL in their state to ship the handgun?

I've never done it but from what it looks like on gun broker, is that your FFL is the one who has to be cool with receiving from a private individual

It must be shipped ffl to ffl.  There maybe an ffl in hawaii that will take a person to person transfer but most shops will not do it. If the gun is stolen and a ffl locally takes it in they will be in a lot of trouble. Also there is no pape trail. Anyone can sell on gunbroker.  Sell you a gun. And ship it out. Where it came from no one knows.

thanks for the responses, my friend was going to sell me his handgun...

If he brings the handgun to Hawaii and sells it to me here how does that work?

Is it illegal for him to bring a handgun to Hawaii via commercial airlines?

Not illegal.

He has to declare it and check it in.

Gun must be unloaded.

Then you can go to HPD to register it.

You still have to go through an FFL.

I would apply for a permit to acquire two weeks before the friend gets here.

If he brings the gun to you here, you will need to go through the permitting process.  If you were to go there (wherever there is), you could return with an out-of-state acquisition and proceed directly to registering your new firearm.
