Howzit, newbie with a question???
« on: March 12, 2013, 06:39:11 PM »
Sorry if this has been discussed before.  I know here in Hawaii, we are not allowed to buy ammo online but is it legal to have a private party send you ammo from the mainland?  For example, if my brother who lives in Vegas has some ammo, can he just throw it in a box and send it to me via UPS?

Mahaloz for da info!

It's not illegal to buy ammo online in Hawaii.

You just have to find a company that is willing to ship it.

A lot of companies just won't do it because they presume it is illegal.

I order ammo online all the time.

Yes your friend can send ammo to you as well. He just has to pay the cost to do it. (Not USPS)

Quite legal, just be prepared for sticker shock on shipping charges.

http://www.ableammo.com/  is one of those that will ship, just be prepared for shipping cost to exceed the cost of the ammo.  yet to see less than $40 and up for shipping even just a couple boxes of .308.

Try aim surpluse. Sign up for email alerts though, cause when they get ammo in it sells quickly.

Also be aware it can be expensive to have ammo shipped here.  If it was cheap and easy to do more people would be doing it, like in the mainland.
For local sales of ammo, OGC has great prices. Probably nearly the same as it would cost to bring it in yourself, without the headache.

Now if there was only an economical way to get it between islands........

I used to curse the Superferry dying, but  realized it was no doubt not allowable to transport ammo on it anyways........

Thanks for the info. Im on the big island and the local shops here have .223 for over $1 per round. Maybe ordering online with the steep shipping might be worth it.  :worship:

I remember carter saying they can ship inter island. Just needed so many cases to make the order.  Maybe do a group buy for the big islands boys if carter got the ammo in stock.

I was in CA last week and I didn't see any .223 anywhere.  Good luck finding anything local either.  Last best on BI that I saw was $16 per box but that probably came and went already.
It is what it is.

dont send any ammo thru usps, you dont want a felony (which would ban you from ever having a gun again in your life!!!)!

You can check in ammo when you fly.  I'd do that if I were you and wanted a lot of bulk ammo.  price to ship 5000 rounds from online show that it runs 700 bucks for shipping and another 300 for hazmat...

related question.  i've read here that you can tellsome companies to forward your purchase to an actual, sea based shipping service to avoid the hazmat fees (or at least some of them).

anyone know and care to explain how to do this and who will?

.223 and 5.56 dries up so fast here, and often there are no choices, i just buy what's available.

They're freight forwarders...basically you get it to the port, they'll load it into a container/onto a ship and you pick it up at the destination. There were only a couple of companies serving Hawaii that would do it a few years ago, now most of them will only forward ammunition for businesses.  They all charge hazmat fees.

When the Big Island Gun Club was doing bulk purchases for members, we worked out a deal with Kessering in Seattle.  They'll deliver anywhere in the Seattle area for free (with their own truck), so we'd have them deliver our pallet to the ship the day it was due to sail, thereby avoiding the freight forwarder.  It took some leg work to set up, but the result was that shipping added less than 3% to the cost of the ammo
