The CO signature is good as long as you are dealing only with the Military. Once that document goes outside the Military into the civilian sector, the documents must be signed by a notary.
I've heard that, too, but then been told in no uncertain terms that whether the state likes it or not, the CO notary thing is valid.

It is possible I guess...I know my S-1 is a notary and often notarizes documents that my LTC signs. I can ask tomorrow and see what they say...

In the early days of the exception, a CO's signature was sufficient for HPD. That is until some high speed individuals without primary command overstepped their authority and started writing up letters for anyone that asked. So now theres the additional B.S. step of getting a civil notarization.

Correct.  There is a difference in standards for military and civil notarial services.

Who ever told you that has been misinformed. Within the US, all military notarial services are subject to the laws of the jurisdiction involved. Refer to 10 USC §1044a and AR 27-55.

I am in the military and need a sample commanders memo that states that I have been trained to use a hangun. Does anyone know where I can find one?
If the person you ask does not already have a sample/template for the letter, then they might not have the authority to sign off on it.
