Private sale firearms transer form
« on: March 22, 2013, 09:05:05 AM »
Looking for the format for a private sale firearms transfer form (AKA bill of sale) that shows that I sold and am transferring ownership of my firearm to another party. I Googled it and came across a Hawaii Island PD one. Maybe thats the same thing? Just gotta switch out Hawaii with Honolulu? Any help is appreciated.

The last time I bought a pistol, the guy wrote all the info on a torn piece of scratch paper.  (Name of owner, Serial number, Make/model, barrel length, caliber)    I took it in, got the permit to acquire, then took the pistol to registration.  That's all there was to it.  (except for all the waiting in line, parking, traffic, taking off from work on multiple days, and various other bullsh*t)

If you want something formal then that is ok too.

I use this for long guns.  ( Handguns you'll need more info. )

Got it from another 2A member and never had a problem with it either buying or selling.  Provides a little less info.

Just copy and paste to word doc. Couldn't image Word doc.   And be sure they have their long gun permit

I bought a pistol from a member on here, all the info was written on the back of a copy of his permit. Took that to HPD, not a problem.

This might be able off topic, but I believe the last time I was at HPD I saw a notice which "requires" the purchaser to have a copy of the seller's registration when applying for a handgun permit. Didn't think much of it at the time, but that does not sound like a value requirement for a private transaction.

no you don't.   You can have the info required written on a napkin. Maybe this changed? But nothing in the laws says anything different.

I thought about taking a pic of the sign, then I realized that wouldn't make them happy. lol

I really don't see a purpose for that requirement,  but to inconvenience a buyer.  All they have to do is punch in the SN into their computer and have the pertinent information in the screen infront of them.    They ask where/whom you are buying from, so if the info don't jive,  then they should investigate further.

I just got a call from HPD about a gun I'm transferring that is joint registered but forgot to put my wife's name on the bill of sale.

Everything is cool but they wanted to be sure the buyer knew it was joint registered, which I told the buyer upfront.

They suggested using a copy of the old registration and just redacted so personal info is blacked out and writing this gun was sold to......with the permit number of the buyer.

I know you need a signature from the seller when you already have the permit.  Do you guys know if I am required to have the sellers signature when I apply for a permit?

Required, no.  But having a signed bill of sale with all the correct information you need for your application, AND the "G" number from the seller's registration form, are good ideas.  HPD will ask the seller's name and address for the permit.  You need at least that much info.

You don't want any mistakes on the permit to acquire.  Any substantial mistakes, and they might make you reapply.

A bill of sale also protects you somewhat.  It shows you had an agreement to buy the gun pending payment and permit.  It's happened before, where a seller gets a higher offer and tries to back out of the deal.

Long guns are easy, since one permit covers all.

Has any of this info changed? Is there an updated form or a specific form I need to use?

If I'm selling one of my pistols to a relative, who is licensed for firearms, do they still have to wait the 2-week application process, and do the back and forth thing at HPD? or can I just go down with them, with the firearm and get it done in a single visit?

they need to go down with the info themselves the first time, wait two weeks, then you can go with them so they can pick up the permit and register the gun at the same time on their second visit
