How tYranny sneaks up on us
« on: April 06, 2013, 09:29:00 AM »
There was a recent proposal in Colorado for granting authority to arrest Sheriffs and other LEOs who refuse to obey some of the new state laws.

One of my correspondents asked me about it.  Here's my answer:

Quote
Yeah, I heard of it a week or so ago, but I thought it was a national proposal.  The far left (I don't want to say "Liberals" because I'm pretty liberal in most respects myself) has gone crazy and is trying every trick in the book to outflank "us."

And they're doing pretty well at it.  The funny thing is that "we" have a lot of miitary folks in our midst, but we are still being outclassed in terms of developing counter-strategies and tactics.

The main problem here is that while "we" are basically just hobbyists and just want to use our guns recreationally (still keeping in mind the basis for and reason behind the Second Amendment), "they" are a dedicated group of professionals with a long-term agenda in mind... to disarm the American population.  And these "pros" are full-time activists with large salaries who far outnumber and out-money and out-think us mere amateurs.

Just look at Mayor Bloomberg, whose vast personal wealth far outclasses the resources of the NRA, GOA, JPFO, SAF, etc combined.  And he can spend his own money on ads, while the mainstream media will not accept ads from  the NRA, GOA, JPFO, SAF, etc.  It's almost like a political campaign where only one candidate is allowed to advertise and sling mud at the other candidate.

Another problem is that too much political power is wielded by the large cities and they usually totally dominate the politics of the rest of the state:  New York City versus New York State, Chicago versus Illinois, Los Angeles versus California, etc, etc.  Oh, and Denver versus Colorado, of course.

There are many other problems, not the least of which is the fact that lawmakers in general are well aware of the fact that they can write and pass blatantly unconstitutional laws, secure in the knowledge that challenges to these laws can only be made in a long and lengthy procsses of judicial review.  The "checks and balances" process, where the court system can negate an unconstitutional law. is broken.

I guess, right down at the bottom line, this is at the root of the pickle we find ourselves in nowadays.  Over many many decades, we "got used to" obeying bad laws which infringe on personal liberty --to the point that the phrase, "you can't fight City Hall" has become an institution in its own right.  So what happens is that people just don't challenge every darned little infringement --like seat belt laws, for instance --on their small personal rights.

They just get used to it.

And that's how the "big" rights get lost, too.

I do believe that the radical and crazy notion that the Founders meant what they said, is gradually soaking through the judicial system.
