What do u think of the new range hours?
« on: April 08, 2013, 12:55:42 AM »
I know its only the first week, but I think they should open 1 hour earlier on weekdays instead of later. More shooters there, probably on their lunch break.

I like it, started at 8am out by 10am.  I just need to get there a little earlier to get a bench.

Isn't it the same as the old hours? They should be open the same hours as C&C offices in Honolulu, but 7 day a week. Then tweak it from there if some days are less busier.
So people using the park will have minimum waiting time.

I think that it is great that the range hours are restored.  3 hours on weekdays was too short, but now if you go around 2 you can still shoot for two hours.

NEW/RESTORED HOURS
On the specific topic of range hours, I like shooters having 4 more hours on the weekends, since those are my range days. More hours equals more time for me to shoot, more time for benches to become available, etc.

SUGGESTION BOX
I'd REALLY like to see after-dark hours during the week for the pistol target area.  It would be cooler in the hot months, it would accommodate after-work practice for people who might work or have family events on weekends, and traffic is much better after 6:30 most days.  Leaving Koko Head at 3pm - 4pm weekdays is smack in the middle of rush hour.  Lighting the pistol range would be easy ... and I'm sure the after-hours shooters wouldn't mind kicking in $5 for the power bill!  Considering what an indoor range costs, $5 is reasonable!  We can have driving ranges open at night, so why not the pistol range?

GENERAL THOUGHTS
My opinion is, any time the state, city, or county administration. sees a demand and makes a decision which actually benefits those asking for change, well, it shows we "as a people" are still calling the shots in government.

Our government exists to serve society as a whole, not to push their own personal or party agenda.  Too bad the nation has been conditioned to think "city hall" is something bigger and stronger than the "ordinary" people they were elected to represent.

I wish they'd open earlier on weekdays. At least like 10. At that time all the neighbors should be up cooking breakfast

There were at least 9 open benches when I got there at 1000 last Friday. Even at 1100, there were still some open.

I'm glad the mayor restored the previous operating hours (which had been  cut back in Oct. 2010).

Next, I hope the Caldwell administration will address improvements to the facilities and doing something about the lines at HPD.

Since the range opens at Noon on Fridays, I would think it unusual for that many benches taken at 1000!  Call me crazy ...

Some days it gets really crowded.  A few months ago, I showed up at 1015 on a Wednesday or Thursday and all the benches were taken.
Just like weekends: I've been there on a Sunday when  all the benches were taken by 6:30. This was under the old, reduced schedule, when the line didn't go hot until 0900.

So last Friday kind of surprised me.

But maybe the last three months of ammo shortages are catching up with us and a lot of peple are conserving.

By "new hours," what you mean is "restored to the originally inadequate hours from before Lingle," right?  I think it's a nice step that we have again what we had before.  And I think that we should not be happy about it, but we should be irate that it took so long to happen.  And we should be positively furious that the administration, while acknowledging that KokoHead is the only public range on the island and thus a unique and important resource, hasn't done more than return us to a status quo which was insufficient a decade ago.

Govenor Lingle had nothing to do with the cutback in range hours.  KHSC is a city and county facility. CCH is headed by the mayor. The range hours and a lot of other city and state programs were cut in 2010, when the Islands were still struggling with the recession. Caldwell was the acting mayor at the time, serving out the balance of the Hannemann term. I don't  fault him for that past decision. Fact is, they just cut each department's budget and that left it up to the Dept of Parks and Rec  bureaucrats to decide what would be cut.

It was inconvenient for shooters, sure. But a lot of other govt spending cuts were happening -- like thousands of workers being furloughed.  Many of those furloughs continue under names like "involuntary leave."

Carlisle, the anti-gun former Honolulu prosecuting attorney, did nothing for shooters while he was mayor for two years. Caldwell has been in office for three months.

As much as I'd like more ranges, better facilities  and even longer shooting hours, I'd also like to have my still-furloughed  relatives get their full jobs back.

SOLUTION:  Hire your relatives to man the range for more hours?   :D

Govenor Lingle had nothing to do with the cutback in range hours.

Never said she did.  Just used her as a point on a timeline.  I can see how you would infer that, though... I should have been more precise.  I just tend to see my history in terms of eras such as "The Lingle years," "The Reagan years," "The Glam years," etc.  The reduction of operating hours happened during "the Lingle years" whether or not she had anything to do with it.

I see. Historical reference by political eras. You're right. Lingle was gov. from Dec. 2002 to Dec. 2010. Range cutbacks happened in Oct. 2010.

Anyhow, with the new old hours, It will be nice to be able to go break in a new barrel at Koko Head in one range session instead of two or three....when and if the new barrel is ever delivered.

I'd settle for repairing the suntan section on the rifle range, and fixing the water fountain = further restoration of what has broken down . . .

They sure were quick to put up the stupid gate though. :-\

then only their family can shoot  and they will probably reserve all the benches in advance
