I wonder if this would over ride state law?

I haven't read the latest bill yet, but I doubt that it is worded in such a way that it overrides state law. If it is then it is more unlikely to pass, I think.

It is relatively easy to say "The Federal Government cannot make a national registry" and quite another to say that the States cannot make registries. That runs counter to how Stave vs. Federal gun laws have worked so far, though a case can be made for it.

I like the thinking, though. I have a feeling that at some point the pro gun folks are going to have to start pushing for laws that clearly delineate what the 2nd amendment means and to specifically protect it. Otherwise its going to continue to get chipped (hacked) away at the State level. This, in essence, is the same as letting the gun controllers define what the second amendment means.

And SpeedTek is correct: records of sale are about the same as a registry. Its not as easily accessible as a registry but and records can be subpoenaed. It requires due process... whatever is left of that.

That's what they said before 9/11.  Now, the Feds can declare you a terrorist, and the process becomes "guilty, with no avenue of appeal."   After all, only a terrorist would be stockpiling more weapons and ammo than they "need."   :wtf:

Half the nation (the anti-gun half) is okay with that.  People are fine with unconstitutional laws as long as the right being trampled isn't one they care to exercise themselves.   >:(

Maybe before we condemn this bill we need to read it...It may provide states like ours that have over restrictive laws some relief .. Maybe we can get someone to put a reciprocity ammendment for CC.....?

Read the bill?  That's just crazy talk!!  Nobody in Congress reads it before voting, so why would we waste our time??   :wtf:

I am as ready as you are to go to war over the 2A; but remember our politicians are not perfect by any means; and most are stupid because they cant see past the next election... They may malfunction and actually give our state more freedom by accident....

I believe the 1994 AWB was an amendment, if memory serves me correct. I personally don't trust Obama, Biden, Feinstein and company under any circumstances. Any infringement on our 2a rights is a non-starter in my view. Senate bill S.649 has proposed amendments. I just don't trust them and IMO Feinstein would gladly concede some form of a reciprocating CCW to get her AWB enacted into law. Don't really know how to sift through all this legal stuff too well but I just don't trust them, and I would think we haven't seen the last of Feinstein's AWB in the form of an amendment.

I'm not sure what amendments SA711-714 mean when it states, "submitted an amendment intended to be proposed to the bill S. 649, which was ordered to lie on the table". The AWB is SA-711. Question for our legal scholar's, does this mean that these proposed amendments are dead or what exactly? Unlike amendments SA711-714, SA-715 (background check) states, "proposed an amendment to the bill S. 649".

Nothing has moved over the weekend. The AWB has been proposed as an amendment, as has the Manchin-Toomey language.

None of the amendments have been officially included (or even discussed) in the bill, yet.

This is still in play - include the AWB.

thanks for those last two links.  It sure sounds like the various amendments could officially be included and discussed.   http://beta.congress.gov/congressional-record/2013/04/11/senate-section/article/S2598-2    It's not over by any means.....

no it's not over
sen reid has said that awb and mag caps will def be proposed as amendments
and that nics compromise amendment will be added first
without the compromise, the republicans were going to filibuster
the compromise allowed for 60 votes to stop the filibuster and bring the bill to the floor
