M&p 22 pistol owners
« on: May 13, 2013, 10:19:29 AM »
First time firing the pistol yesterday. Had major feeding and extracting problems. Used wide variety of ammo. Fed bulk. Fed auto match. Cci blazer. Cci mini mags. Xpert hv. All had the same symptoms. FYI I didn't clean the gun prior to firing. Factory lube. Is this normal? Does it just need to be broken in or just cleaned? :shaka:

I dont have the .22, but i do have several of the other cals, so this is just my opinion.  I'd definitely clean and lube and try again.  A lot of times that stuff that's on the gun from the factory isn't lube, its a preservative/protectant, and can slow down or inhibit the action/slide enough to cause problems.  Not sure if it will help with your gun's issues, but maybe worth a try.  Actually, I was looking to pick one of those up myself, most of the reviews I've read have been really positive.

I've got one of those pistols, and have shot over 2k rounds through it.  The only issues I've had, are an occasional double feed.  Which is actually my fault, for racking the slide too slow.  FYI, I've only used cheap Blazer ammo so far.  What I would suggest, is giving it a good cleaning, and getting rid of all the gunk, from the factory.  When I got mines new, the looked like it was swimming in lube.  Plus, whatever they slather on the pistol at the factory, is super thick.  Which I think could be the cause, of your malfunctions.  I also believe, that like any new firearm, it's going to take a couple hundred rounds, to break in.

I'd definitely give it a good clean and lube and try shooting it again.

i suggest a good alcohol cleaning then applying ballistol.

i tried many lubes and even a couple greases. ballistol gives it the right amount of slick without gumming up. i was happy with froglube til i sprayed it down with aerosol ballistol.
when i shoot it a lot it makes a difference compared to the rest. i put it through its paces every time i take it out at the silhouette side. at least 500 up to 1k rounds.

also try polishing your chamber.
use the takedown wrench and remove the barrel and put a qtip on a drill or dremel and then lightly polish it at a slow speed with metal polish.

i have a bunch of old .22 from the 90's that would either bulge a little from old brass, or just had thicker brass to begin with because of oxidation.
anyway after polishing the chamber i got solid extraction out of any bullet, old or new.  :-[ and i only run the cheap stuff through this pistol and its over 95% reliable. 4% of failures are probably my cheap ammos fault.

exact same problem with mine.
1st time out - straight out of the box
2nd time - same problems, even after thorough clean/lube

call s&w to have them send you a prepaid fedex label
HI residents are unable to use their automated online form to get a label
mine is all packed up and getting picked up by fedex today

oh yeah and when you load the mag make sure it double stacks evenly

the easiest way to load it properly is pull the load assist button down only about a half inch and then use your other thumb to press in the round.

it drove me crazy this one weekend because my friend had a lot of problems while using it about a month after i bought it. the magazine wouldnt load the next round and the gun would just go click and when you cycle the action there was nothing in the chamber.
i finally saw that he would pull the tab all the way down then just drop bullets in there. i was too busy to watch him load because i was shooting something else and he has a couple pistols so i wasnt worried about his range etiquette.

ive also read trimming the overly strong hammer spring a little helps fix the feeding issue, but i dont want to cut my spring since s&w wont just sell me a spare. they cant just spare a square spring  :D

That's because, it IS a good pistol.  But, just like anything that is mass manufactured, there are going to be units, that have something faulty.  Pretty much goes for anything that is mass manufactured.

I have one that I bought new and haven't had any problems using 4 different types of cheap bulk ammo.  Have about 800 rounds thru it.  I was disappointed that the pistol only came with 1 mag and it seems like you can only buy factory mags and they are expensive.

Wow that sucks.  I bought one in January and has run just fine for me.  All I have shot out of it is Federal Bulk pack.  I have 5 mags for mine and all run fine.  I probably only put about 500rds though mine.

I do have a Gemtech Outback 2 mounted on it so that creates extra back pressure.  One of my old P-22's was real finicky but with the silencer on I have never had a problem.

Have the M&P 22 and had hardly any feed problems.  Few for first 100 rounds but hardly any now after putting a few hundred through it.  Had to make  some sighting adjustments though.  Seems to shoot a little left and high out of the box.  Gun seems better with time, keep shooting it.

mine shoots high left too. i bought some dawson precision fiber optics and they helped a bit. it still shoots about an inch or two above poa if you use a 6 oclock hold. still shoots high but i guess at least i can see what im shooting at the silhouette side now.

alcohol then ballistol

That's the exact same way, I clean my guns too!!!  Hickok45 on YouTube also cleans his firearms in the same fashion, and he does a LOT of shooting.
