How old were you when you started shooting?
« on: May 16, 2013, 08:09:15 AM »
That thread on preschools and KK's 3 yr. old got me to thinking about how old I was when I started shooting, and when I introduced my children to shooting.

When did you start?

When did you start your children? Or at what age WOULD you start them?

Personally, I think I was in second grade so I was about 7 yrs. old....a 22 cal. bolt action.
For my kids, I think between 5 and 10. They had to be strong enough to break the bbl on an air rifle or crank the lever on a Red Ryder.

The first gun I shot was a Daisy BB Gun at age 5.  Then at 7 years old I got to shoot a true firearm, my dad's old beater pump action .22.  I had to prove I was responsible and safe before I could shoot the big boy gun.

I shot my first 22 bolt action when I was 5 and 2 years later my Mom bought me my very own Winchester bolt action 22 rifle for my birthday. She had only intended on buying me a bb rifle but the guy at the general store talked her into it and the manager gave her a deal she couldn't turn down....needless to say I was one VERY happy kid!!  :D

The first mod I had was a Ray-O-Vac flashlight that I duct taped to the barrel for hunting groundhog and rabbits at night...lol!!

As for my children, well my daughter will be 6 this year so she's got 3 more years to the "legal" shooting age at Koko Head. As soon as she's old enough she'll be there and I've already started teaching both of my children about firearm safety.

Started with suction-cup tipped dart gun at around 4.
Dang I used to love those.

First real gun was a .22 at Camp Erdman with the Indian Guides around 8 or 9.

Started the kids with airsoft at about 6 for the youngest. Then pellet gun. 2 youngest started real guns at 9 at Kokohead. Tehcnically the earliest allowable. They couldn't wait for their 9th birthdays.

I first shot a BB gun around age 5 or 6. Looked like this one I pulled off the web....believe it's a Daisy Model 25 Slide Action BB gun. BB guns have sure come a long way since then. My Father bought me an Ithaca M-49, Lever Action, single shot .22 and that was my first firearm, which I still own today. Of course he actually kept it stored but he took me shooting regularly. That was also the first firearm I shot...I'm pretty sure I was 7 years old.

First gun was a daisy bb gun, I was about 5. Second gun was a 760 crossman bb/pellet gun at about 8. I lost that gun because of to many bb gun fights with my buddy. Got my first real gun when I was 13, it was a Savage over and under (20 gauge on bottom and .22 mag on top). Man I loved that gun! I was a dumb ass and sold it.

Played Duck Hunt in grade school .......
Started shooting a Co2 bb pistol at thirteen years old. I learned first hand about ricochet and almost shot my eye out.
At fourteen I bought a Marlin 60. My dad did the initial paper work. We got home and he told me "not to kill any thing and treat the gun like it's always loaded".
God, guns, and guts made America. Let's keep all three!

Way back when I was 10 or 11 while attending a scouting camp, got to fire a few rounds of .22 through a simple bolt gun of some kind.   Really got hooked while spending summers with family in Placerville, plinking for hours with a 10/22 off my uncles deck.   Shot my first "real" rifle in the Corps at age 17... I enjoy a ton of hobbies but shooting is one of my longest running passions

Mom came home one day and gave me her weapons cache....

Mom was on the Punahou Rifle Team back in '56

Her words were: "Don't shoot anybody!"

THANKS MOM!

Sometimes my mom would drop me off at the rifle range and I would hang out there 8-5pm
All the older guys taught me all kinds of things!

At 10 I got to hang around a family friend who was a Gunsmith on weekends.

Learned a lot!
