Thumbhole or Standard ?
« on: May 20, 2013, 02:33:29 PM »
I just picked up 2 new rimfire rifles with thumbhole stocks to go with the standard stocked rimfires.  ( bought them due to opportunity, not because they were thumbholes )

It ignited a debate among the kids in the family about thumbhole vs. standard stocks and which they like better.

Curious to know what other members think ?  Doesn't need to pertain to rimfires.

This exactly.  Although I'll say if it's a choice between thumb hole and pistol grip, I'd take the pistol grip for ergonomics, the thumbhole in a nicely finished stock for aesthetics.

Standard stock for me.

I've fired my share of thumb hole stocks and they were always a little awkward for me.

I distinctly remember firing a thumb hole AK and due to the hole placement it jacked my thumb way up and was very uncomfortable to fire.

Standard.  Never have much cared for either thumbholes or pistol grips.  Well, not on my longarms, anyway!

I prefer pistol grips because I cant hold rifle stocks anymore with my arthritis. It hurts too much.

Thumbhole stocks are weird...

I'd say depends on who's shooting.  If its a first timmer or person learning go with the standard stock cause it teaches proper pull techniques.   But if they have trigger time shoot thumb hole it tends to be more comfortable and can get a better cheek weild

^^^THIS^^^ is by far the best worded answer.  It boils down to personal preference and works for the shooter.

Thanks Fst. Just added poll. Never tried that before.

I totally agree but just wanted each persons preference as my kids go at it about which they like better.  Which is silly, because is really is just about what you like and feel more comfortable with.

Me personally, I'm currently on the fence. I like the look and feel of the standard stock and have standards in laminate on all my centerfires. ( excluding ARs )

But I think my tripper pull with the thumbhole on the rimfires feels better but not sure about cheekweld.

I like standard, with a more vertical grip,  then pistol type, lastly thumbhole.
