IWB vs OWB?
« on: May 23, 2013, 12:53:44 PM »
ok so all this talk about magpul class got me thinking
which is the best system for classes only?
i know you're supposed to train how we carry, but since we cannot carry here, what is the thinking?
i guess if one is going to do gun gaming, OWB is better, but am i overthinking this (as i always do)?

If you are new to "Presentations from Concealment" just stick to an OWB.  Trust me on this one.  Too many people go to a class trying to draw from concealment and eventually switch to the OWB holster set up at the end of TD1.

If you are going to carry a chest rig make sure you have a some kind of drop leg holster to clear your pistol.

Once again, if you use the class as a beta test for your gear and you are not competent with it then you are fucking the other people who are paying tuition to attend the course by messing with their time.

I am not sure if you can do this, but practice your concealment drills in private or see if any of the local clubs will allow that.  Just check with you club rules and regulation.

Good luck to you guys!

This question came up in an "Ask the SME" thread a while back on M4C.  It will likely depend on the instructor and how comfortable they are with your firearm handling skills.  At the basic level, they probably want to at least be comfortable with your handling skills before they let you run concealed.  Running your guns in OWB allows a quick glance to check the condition of your firearm.

I took my RCS holster and even an AIWB holster to my recent handgun class, but it was so damn cold there that I didn't even bother trying to run concealed.  The instructor did go over considerations for carrying concealed, like garment restrictiveness, layering, etc (all of which didn't really apply to a hot climate like Hawaii).

In any case, be sure you use your gear to try to shake out some of the issues before you get to the course.  You can do that through dry fire, draws, etc in your home if you can't find a suitable range to try out your gear before hand.  Before the handgun class, I added a grip plug to two of my Glock 17s and it ended up causing a problem with binding magazines, not allowing them to drop free upon reload drills.  I should've tested it out before hand, but I didn't have time and figured what harm could a grip plug do?

OWB will ALWAYS be easier and quicker to draw from, but not always the best option for cary.

As you said you can not carry there so that leaves that out.

Any time that is jacket weather I OWB carry.  Even half the time in the summer time.  We have legal open carry here but depending on where I am headed and what i am dong I will often carry concealed (with license of course).  My favorite holster is actually an Uncle Mikes paddle OWB holster because they cheep, effective and seem to carry just right on my body.  I also have a Raven holster that I OWB carry with generally in the winter when we have a lot less daylight then dark as it carries with my light mounted on it.
Don't be confused, I live in Washington.  Yes the state.
