I heard HPD is asking ruger charger owners to turn in their chargers because they are prohibited in Hawaii. Why do they let you registra it in the first place. They shoud grandfather it becausr it is already registra.

You can't be deprived of property without due process of law.  Contact an attorney, if you need recommendations I have them or HRA has them.

Also what is the source of this request?

I think I had mentioned in the past (possibly on another forum) that "technically" the charger meets the inclusion criteria in HRS134 to be considered an "assault pistol." I also believe that at that time folks made some comments that "how could they be illegal if HPD is registering them."

The other issue, besides the deprivation of property without due process, and one that might be more "powerful" politically is that the anti-gun folks asways say that registration of guns would never lead to confiscation. Well, at this point it appears that HPD is only asking, but if they decide to push the issue, well they have the Charger's owner's names and addresses. Don't think they won't use them to obtain search warrents and come to you and just take them......

cause the ruger charger has the potential to take over the government if it found its way into the wrong hands :shake:  you know,  its got that mag placed in front of the p.g.  which makes it extra dangerous.

HPD's also probably under the impression that the ruger assault pistol has that shoulder thing that goes up.

I was at HPD firearms today, renewing my long gun permit and i talked story for a bit with a guy who bought a charger at security equipment, picked it up today, brought it down to register it and was in the middle of having it seized as an assault pistol.

What a load of bs! The magnum research charger (a mechanically identical copy) doesnt qualify as an assault pistol because it meets the maximum weight requirement because of its carbon fiber barrel.

When i left, there was no talk of arrest or anything, the solution in the air being to reconfigure with long barrel and return in 72hrs to register it as a rifle.

What a world, we live in!

i dont think weight has anything to do with it.  the barrel's shorter than 16 inches and the mag is forward of the pistol grip.

The hawaii assault pistol ban has a weight criteria. The gun has to be semi-auto, detachable mag, plus two characteristics -  weight, mag outside of pistol grip, semi auto version of a machine gun, few others. I kept reading and re-reading it a few weeks ago, in anticipation of getting me a mare's leg

So wait... so HPD allowed the dealers to import the pistol... allowed him to aquire the permit to purchase... and now are confiscating it when he brought it down after picking his permit up (the first time) and going to get to the gun registered?

HPD allowed the dealers to import and register it, have it for sale, approved this poor guy's handgun permit to acquire, he waited, picked up the permit, picked up the gun, came back to register, and was told it is illegal and had it seized.

right on,   i didnt realize you needed 2 characteristics to disqualify.  i thought any of them would disqualify it.

Who do you all think brought this to HPD's attention?   Im guessing some "used to be" pro gun rookie that got a badge and feels all powerful and sh##.

EDIT: not a cop hater. but, who in the world else would go and bring this to hpd's attention.  no gun loving regular joe I know.

I wonder if an acceptable workaround would be to permanently affix the magazine, ala a kalifornia AR-15

If ya got real tiny fingers, then yes. Tangentially, does this mean kalifornia style pinned mag, top-load only AR pistols could fly, too?

Talk about HPD and it's gun-ownership-discouraging policies. Poor guy wasted all his time, excitement, and money for at least 2 weeks. If it was illegal it should have stopped before even entering the shop. THEN, if THAT failed, when he brought the information in to wait 2 weeks.

What's the point of gun registration if the registering department have no idea what you're registering, other than to make the process long and seemingly insurmountable to discourage ownership? Not to mention it solved a grand number of zero crimes since it's inception.
