I guess they want to make sure no one is shooting 50 caliber rounds?

Maybe because if you get pulled over by hpd or something the range will not only have your name for proof you were there, but also the guns you were shooting?

My guess is, somebody in LE or government asked the question, "What are the most commonly used calibers at the range?" or a similar question.  They probably just keep that info for statistical purposes.

I was thinking it was so they know how much lead is downrange, but they don't ask for the amount.

I think it's just cause someone a long time ago thought it was a good idea way back when to track it, then it was just copied over and over since then and used for nothing.

I doubt the gun shops have access to what's in the book, but it's a good idea.

Oh, guarantee.  People blow through that stuff QUICK!

 :stopjack:

Maybe someone can ask the RO next time they go to the range?  My visits to the range have become fewer and fewer.

city is to let them know where you are coming from
it could be used to study where a new range would be needed

^^^This^^^.   I'm pretty certain that log is used to establish you were at the range so if you get pulled over on the way back, you can prove you were legally transporting a firearm.  If you log in with a 45 but are found with a 38, it would be a discrepancy and could be a problem. I guess the city is just more detail about who you are.  I guess if they pull you over on the way to the range, they can tell if you're headed in that direction although there is no law (that I know of) that says you must travel by the most direct route.

While the calibers listed can establish a valid transport of firearms scenario, absence of logging a gun in the book is NOT evidence of failure to follow the law.

If I bring a gun to the range and don't have time to shoot it, or if I'm just showing it to a prospective buyer, it will not be logged in the books.  that doesn't negate the legal transportation of the firearms to the range for legitimate purposes.

Also, nothing prevents entering calibers of weapons I may not have in my range bag, allowing me to establish an alibi in advance of transporting a gun to an unauthorized location.

Result:  the book's use for establishing legal transport of firearms is minimal at best.

You all want a simple solution ????? Just ask the guy in charge of the book and post for all to see why he has to put out that book and what the collective info is used for... then all these speculative answers are answered. Just my thought.
