Eyewitness Jason Garrett told CNN the suspected shooter was dressed all in black and appeared to be wearing a tactical vest. The man appeared to be carrying an AR-15 rifle, Garrett said.

Expect more calls for  gun control:

http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/07/us/california-college-gunman/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

A female witness -- who was shaken up by the ordeal and asked not to be identified -- said she heard a noise, realized it was a gunshot, then took off running.

Then, in a hallway, she saw a dark-haired man whom she initially mistook for a police officer but later realized was the shooter. The man -- who she said was wearing black combat boots and what appeared to be a bullet-proof vest -- was quiet and walking casually.

"(He had) a big shotgun," the woman said.
She and a colleague eventually realized something wasn't right and ran in the opposite direction. "Multiple" gun shots rang out at one point, in an exchange of gunfire the woman described as like a war zone.

Gee, but how could this happen in California? I thought their oppressive, draconian laws were supposed to stop gun violence like this?Oh, wait, all it does is punish the law abiding citizen and allows the criminals to continue being criminals.

Tragic for sure! Wish the damn MSM would just say "gun" instead of "military style assault weapon"...

Are you telling me that they still don't know the kinds of guns that were used...

Yeah, that probably wouldn't have happened in Texas.

Well, except that college campuses are gun free zones even there.

I wonder if the Left will ever get that gun free zones are targets? And so are unarmed people.

The left will never get it.  They want to regulate everything you do so they can protect you.  Thus you will need them.  No guns, no sodas, no private communications (even though Bush had a hand in that one also, they could have stopped it when they took charge). All in the name of your protection!  Just listen to Obama---"you can't have 100% security and 100% privacy, you can't expect us to protect you without some kind of sacrifice or inconvenience."  I'm sorry, I don't remember asking for any of that from you.

In the land of political correctness and gun free [zones], one must wonder why the identity of the shooter at Santa Monica College is not being released. California, home of anti-gun zealot[ s ] Feinstein and Boxer is staying quiet, names are not being released. The liberal media and a politically correct government may not want readers to know that the shooter has a questionable background, and maybe citizenship?

It has been released in the wake of six deaths, that the shooter had been hospitalized in the mental institution for threatening violent actions on another person. One wonders why our un-Constitutional NSA, DHS, or FBI practices did not have him in their sights? According to a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN on Saturday that the gunman had suffered mental health issues. A couple of years ago, he was hospitalized for treatment after allegedly talking about harming someone, according to the official.

CNN makes immediate mention that it’s not clear whether the state government or his family committed him for treatment or whether he committed himself. It’s also unclear under what circumstances he was released. They said that the gunman has yet to be identified, but insist that the authorities have found no link to domestic or international terror.

The out of the blue statement by the investigating source creates my own curiosity, since the name is not being released of the shooter or the first two victims, the father and the brother of the shooter.

This is what I have discovered, that property records indicate that Samir Zawahri was the owner of 2036 Yorkshire Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90404. On Friday, one of Samir Zawahri’s son allegedly shot Samir and then allegedly burned down the Yorkshire Avenue house. The complete name for Samir Zawahri’s son has yet to be confirmed by police. Samir Zawahri was the father of Santa Monica College shooter who is now dead, Zawahri is from Lebanon. Samir Zawahri and another of his adult sons were the first two killed by the Santa Monica College. The shooter burned down the family home owned by Zawahri. Prior to June 4 that year, the registered owner was Randa Abdou and/or with joint owner Samir Zawahri. Police have yet to indicate if Randa Abdou was Samir Zawahri’s ex-wife. Neighbors however claim that Samir had allegedly been the subject of a recent divorce. The shooter’s mother, whom he resided with, had been in an ongoing domestic dispute that had resulted in a restraining order against Zawahri, since 1998. The mother of the shooter Randa Abdou, is suspected to be back in the Middle East.

Of course we don’t know if the shooter was on some sort of Jihad, nor was just a nutcase like an Adam Lanza or Jared Loughner. I’m sure glad that Obama and his NSA spied on all Americans phone and Internet records in order to prevent this from happening!

Looks like that gun free zone, and those strict laws really worked out well stopping a mass shooting?

When only cops have guns, it's called a "police state".

I like how it's automatically a military style assault rifle. Who remembers the days when every gun used was an AK-47? Even if they used an SKS or something not even similar. Now everything is labeled as an AR-15.

Isn't an AK-47 an assault rifle now?  Because it "belongs on the battlefield and not in the hands of civilians?"

An "ASSAULT" rifle is nothing more than a tool that when put in the hands of an oppressed people,

frees them from a tyrant government.......

Try imagining for a moment that we were a government entrusted to "govern" people......

If there was a threat coming towards my kids in my absents, I wouldn't want them to wait for me

to be present...... I would want them by any means to stop that threat....

Our so called government knows exactly what they are doing..... They know how much unarmed, defenseless

citizens get killed by armed criminals.... They love all these mass shootings....

It helps their cause.....  :-\

The government just doesn't want us law abiding citizens or anyone of that matter

giving them a good fight when its time to go ghetto on us............

If its full auto you could say its an assault rifle. Other than that its a semi automatic rifle. If you remember in the 90's the media reported more or less everything was an AK-47 and in the picture the gun used would be completely something else. Now you see the AR-15 as the big bad rifle the media reports on first thing, then it turns out to be something else.
