Needing some 22 pistol info
« on: June 14, 2013, 02:11:58 PM »
Looking into getting a 22 pistol for my kids and wife to shoot while were at the range. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on something good to look into. Maybe a sig mosquito, M&P 22 or maybe a ruger sr22. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a M&P 22 and it's been excellent.  Soft shooter and a perfect lead in for the 9/40/45 versions.  It doesn't seem to like the Federal Champion bulk pack, but other than that, it runs great.

I'd say a ruger mk III or a ruger 22/45.  Would be a good starter pistol that can be upgraded in the future.   Its accurate out of the box and does not have a larger slide to rack.
If you want them to learn on a gun similar to a semi auto pistol you may have look at the ruger sr 22 or the m&p 22 seems a popular choice.   Though there were a few guys having issues with ammo cycling in the m&p 22.

heard bad reviews on the Sig Mosquito, but i never actually shot one myself.

i have a Beretta Neos.
great gun for low $200's
rail on top for mounting optics
eats up any ammo so far, no problems.
i have put almost 1000 rounds thru it, still going strong.

The Ruger SR22 is an excellent modern 22lr pistol.

The Ruger Mark series (1,2&3) are excellent, reliable and durable.

You might also consider a 22lr revolver. I have a Ruger Single 10 that I absolutely love.

As far as reliability, these would be my top choices.

Maybe a 22lr meet and greet at the silhouette range is in order for 2a members.

Dear God stay away from the Mosquito.  You would feel better if I just came over once a week and kicked you in the nutz.

This being said..............Buckmark or Ruger pistols would be my suggestion.

Plus 1 on any ruger model in .22. I am looking for a single six to add to the collection.
My Mark II goes to the range with me every time. No matter what else I may shoot.
The only issue is disassembly to fully clean, but that can be learned.

Seen a bunch of reviews also on the mosquito having FTF and FTE issues with certain types of Ammo.

I'm having the same problem now with the Federal bulk pack the blue box, having feed and eject problems, everything else seems to be okay.  .  Other than that only problem was that you need to sight in the gun cuz it was way off from the factory but Im liking the gun now.  I wouldn't even consider the mosquito.

Thanks for the input Kingkeoni I try to take the family early mornings on sundays but were usually on the pistol side. Didn't get a chance yet to try the silhouette side yet but will one day.

Thanks everyone for your inputs I think im leaning more towards the Ruger. Not as finicky on types of ammo you can run thru it, easy to handle, pretty good reviews I've seen so far. Now just need to save since that money tree I planted isn't growing.

Anything else to say about the Neos?  Thinking about getting one.  Looks like Star Trek but as long as it works  :shaka:

Just to be more clear,
I did have 2 feeding problems with Winchester ammo
But everything else was no problem:
Blazer, cci, federal, American eagle, all shot well
It's easy to break down and clean. Just unscrew a screw, barrel comes off and you're done.
I put a cheap red for sight on it, real fun to shoot.

Ruger Mk. 1 (or more modern variant) gets my vote.  I've had one for 35 years and it's never failed.  You may pay a little more for it than some other pistols, but in this case you really do get what you pay for.

I'll say ruger mark (1,2,3) not because I own one, but i've shot a few and never had any problems with them. One big plus is that you can mount a red dot to it, which I can bet your wife and kids will like, and make it way easier to aim and shoot.
