dimples in case shoulder
« on: June 15, 2013, 02:54:28 AM »
setup my RCBS full sizing die per instructions. screwed die down till it touches the shellholder and than back it in 1/4 per the directions.  lightly lubbed the entire  case, sent it though the die and this was the result... dimples along the shoulder...

the bullet mouth is flared so what did I do wrong?

Excessive case lube. Clean your sizing die. Use only a light even coat on the case only. See if that helps.

The case could be to long or you need to back the die a little more.

Yup, that's right--too much case lube or crud built up in die.  It shouldn't be a matter of excessive case length--normally you check and trim after depriming and I haven't seen an over-length case that dimpled after depriming, unless there was excessive lube on the case or in the die.

What caliber?

it's a 308 CBC case using a regular RCBS die on an RCBS jr3 press.... I applied a light coat of imperial die wax around the entire case. the die was cleaned before using.

when I measure the die seating do I back it out 1/4 turn after it touches the shell holder or screw it in 1/4 turn? the directions say to screw the die in another 1/4 turn after it touches the shellholder.

Yes, you're supposed to screw the die in another quarter turn (more or less) to full length resize.  You need to lube the case body and the inside of the neck (very lightly) only--no lube on the shoulder.

Are you shooting a semi-auto rifle?  Could it be that the cases were dented from ejection?

Resize a case without the expander button and see what happens.

thanks, these were fired from my bolt action and case length measured using the dillon case gauge. I ran it though the full length die (1/4 turn in) twice and it had 2 dimples each time.

I thought I applied the wax really lightly but I will try again...

I was reading some dies are adjusted in or out after touching the shell plate. is it all dependent on the die maker itself?

thanks guys, I started from scratch to retrace my steps...

*cleaned die
*reset die seating based on touching the shell plate and 1/4 turn in
* lubed case lightly including inside the neck

case came out perfect no dimples....

but I noticed a line below the shoulder, is that die to full length resizing?

Which way does the line run?  Length and location?  A pic would help.

That looks pretty normal to me. Its from the rough finish in your sizing die. I tumble my brass in dry media after sizing so  don't need to wipe the lube off, as a bonus, it polishes out crap like that.

thanks for info I'll try that... the imperial die wax makes the cases slick and tarnishes it fast

+1

I recently re-charged my corncob media with cheapo drugstore automotive rubbing/polishing compound and the brass comes out better than new--super shiny and clean after 2-3 hours.  Give it a try if your media isn't cutting it.
