I love the prosecutor's take on this!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Good for the homeowner!
Why is it that the article keeps referencing the criminal stating "I don't think you can shoot someone who is unarmed," ??
Trying to make the public sympathetic?  More excuses, 'I was drunk, I don't remember what happened'  phewy, gimmie a break!  Hhaha

I was drunk, I don't remember what happened, but I was in a stranger's home, again, I destroyed property to gain access to a stranger's home, again, but I swear I didn't know I was robbing someone, again, I was just drunk.  ::)

you shoot at someone fleeing in Hawaii and you're probably looking at a long "3 hots and a cot" and some good ol correctional officer beat downs.

less lethal birdshot?

Let this be a lesson, bird shot does NOT work for home defense.

If it all you have, then by all means use it. But, had this been a didicated attacker, it may have ended with the homeowner shooting 'til dry and having ot use his shotgun as a club while a minimally injured assailant continued the assault. Use buckshot......

He probably heard the gun "RACK" and said "Oh sorry wrong house again!" If all you have is bird shot, you must always carry the nunchucks! O0

So what should you use for home defense? I've heard 00, 4 buckshot or slugs. Looks like general consensus is that birdshot is not effective although I know some people who use it for HD.

And what is the best way to keep a shotgun ready in the house yet safe from kids? I would like to keep my shotgun ready for HD but I have small kids in the house and I don't have a rifle safe.

At very close range bird shot is as deadly as anything else.  00 buck is probably what I would use, slugs might have a little too much penetration.

Can alternate, shot  / slug / shot / slug / shot imo.
