Buying a weapon from a visiting friend
« on: June 26, 2013, 01:24:13 PM »
If a friend of mine brings along a couple of guns when he visits, can I buy them from him?  Do I go to my FFL and "transfer" it to him, then "aqcuire" it from the FFL?  It would seem the same as completing an out-of-state transfer, just doing it in person

if my friend hand-carried to the FFL, it would be different then mailing it to the FFL, for a typical out of state transfer?

It's no problem.  I transfer a bunch of guns in every year, through my FFL.  Just wondering if we went straight to the FFL, in person, would it be legit.  thanks for the clarification.   :shaka:

I was just ASSuming that HOW it got to the FFL didn't matter, but I guess it does.  Normally,  I have long guns mailed to the FFL, and I pick it up (with my valid rifle permit) after they tell me it's been declared with HPD.  Then I register it. No shortcuts.

Not sure why people have to take a simple question and make it seem so difficult (or suggest impropriety)...

If a friend of mine brings along a couple of guns when he visits, can I buy them from him?  Do I go to my FFL and "transfer" it to him, then "aqcuire" it from the FFL?  It would seem the same as completing an out-of-state transfer, just doing it in person
The answer is yes (to all of it). You can buy them. You can go through an FFL. And it is basically the same as an out-of-state acquisition (through the FFL).

BUT since you have a permit to acquire, I'd suggest the simpler and cheaper method ($16.50 vs. whatever the FFL might charge) of just going with your friend to HPD. He can register and transfer to you at the same time. I've done this several times with friend visiting or passing through before going overseas. A couple of times they just registered it to me and didn't bother with the rest of the rigmarole.

Doh!!!  Now I feel really stupid. That's sounds really easy, especially since the lines are fairly short at HPD now
