Hunting Pigs

Hey all -

I'm interested in hunting pigs, but have never hunted before.  I've read up on the rules for hunting http://www.state.hi.us/dlnr/dofaw/hunting/MammalHuntingRegs_Chap123.pdf and have a good idea of what's needed in order to legally hunt.

I'll be on the big island, in Puna.  I'd be using a rifle (caliber 7.62x39) without dogs.

What techniques do you use? Sit and wait or go on the stalk?
If a pig comes onto the property I'm renting, am I allowed to "hunt" it (assuming I have permission from my landlord).
What does the average pig weigh after being gutted?
How do you butcher a pig?

Suggest you join a Pig Hunting group in your area.

OR you can Pay some one to take you pig hunting and talk with him.  He'll know ALL the Does and Don'ts.
Plus, he'll even cleanit for you.  As in all cases talk to him about who gets to keep meat etc.

Alls I can say, if a pig wanders onto your property and you want to shoot it, Beware Your Surroundings!! In other words, know that bullet is gonna do some traveling so just watch out.

Also, the weight after you gut the pig is like half or three quarters the full weight, but I never did a before-after measurement. Off a 100-150 pound pig, you probably gonna get 50-100 pounds meat. That's just my guess though.

I guess you should google around for some vids on processing the meat. Personally, I wash it, look at it, call my family outside, hang it up, skin it, gut it, chop off the head, wear it like a cape :D , split it, quarter it, make steaks, then eat it! All in that order too. Really nothing to it, and depending on the smell of the meat, you can chill it overnight in ice water to get the blood out.

Damn, all this talk about meat, I'm gonna go bbq some ribs!

Has anyone hunted the Puna Forest Reserve?  I'm going to be close to it, and that's probably the most likely place I'd go hunting.

EDIT:  The Rules Regulating Mammal Hunting PDF file (the summarized version) says nothing about Puna Forest Reserve/Wao Kele

Just got the number for the hunting class at WGS on Sunday. After completing that class we're registered for long gun, hand gun and hunting right? Can't wait to take the class!

Negative on long guns and hand guns certs. The hunting cert is only for hunting, which you can use to get a license.

Sorry if I misunderstood the question, but permit to acquire and hunting cert are separate things.
