Spouse joint registration require physical firearms?
« on: July 11, 2013, 10:11:45 AM »
Folks, do any of you know whether or not I need to bring the physical firearms to HPD for a joint registration? The firearms are already registered to my wife, and now I am going to joint register.

Do I just apply for the handgun/long gun permits as usual, but use the same serial numbers? Do I need to bring the actual firearms into HPD or will my name simply be added to the register?

Thanks.

TomG would be the person to ask.

From my understanding, you'll have to bring your wife and the gun, and it will be "transferred" from your wife to your wife and you.

you just need the info for the guns, fill out the forms, and if any are handguns then you need your handgun safety class. then wait the two weeks for the background checks.

OK, I got my hunting cert (for the handgun), and yes I will bring the marriage cert, thanks for reminder.

I also got this funky doctor's appointment to deal with, as you guys know.  >:(

So, after the 14 days or whatever, I do NOT need to bring the firearms, but just pick up my permits right?

(I guess I will know FOR SURE when I go, but I thought I'd ask here so that we can properly schedule ourselves; it is a pain in the ass if both my wife and I have to take time off to do this registration).

Thanks for replies.

PM TomG, he just did the exact same thing.

Don't speculate.

1st contact - apply for a permit to acquire.  You will need your stuff here.

2nd contact - pick up permit 14 days later

3rd contact - register the gun. can be on the same day as 2nd contact. You and your wife will also need your stuff here.
I think, therefore I am armed.

"Stuff" means papers, or means also firearms?

Because as I understand it, when you first apply, you do not need the firearm there, but you need the serial # and the receipt from the LGS purchase.

Then when you pick up the (approved) permit 14 days later, you have the physical arms there also to register.

But I am not sure in my case, with the spousal joint registration, if the arms need to also be there since they were already examined by the HPD in the first registration.

Ok, I'll answer here and in PM.

You're getting referred to me because I recently went through the process of taking my collection, which is respectable in size, and changing it from being registered in my name only to joint registration with my wife.

For longarms, we hauled them down in lots of 4 or 5, that being as many as we could easily manage at a time.  She had to take her Permit to Acquire and we had to have the original registration and a certified copy of our marriage license.  Each gun was passed through the window, inspected, matched to the original registration.  For her use, they created new registration forms.  For my use, they typed on the original registration forms, adding information.

For handguns, she was required to fill out an application for a Permit to Acquire for each gun.  For that step, we did not need the guns, only the information you would normally take to HPD.  Then we waited two weeks.  After two weeks, we loaded all of the handguns into a couple of very heavy duffel bags and went back.  Again, she needed her permits, I needed the original registrations, and we needed a certified copy of our marriage license.  Again, she got fresh, new forms, and my forms had additional information typed on them.

For the handguns, HPD opted not to inspect the actual firearms.  This pissed me off, because we had manhandled those two heavy duffels up there for no reason!  I wouldn't count on having that happen, though; I think the guys behind the window had just gotten tired of seeing us!

So now, for each gun, we have two registration forms.  Hers are nice and neat; mine have typewritten info crammed in the margins.

What about if we just TRANSFERRED OWNERSHIP of the firearms to me? Does the seller of a firearm have to be at HPD as well?

Hey, where you guys park when there is full parking at the HPD (the underground parking around the back).

We tried once to park across at that homeworld furniture place but it was a bit iffy as they might have towed us.
