Know what you mean. I had a bad experience with him the first time I went into his shop.  Similar to what others have had.  When I wanted a savage .22lr boltgun he was the only place on the island that had them in stock.  I really didnt want to go back because of the first impression that I had, but I was like,  what the hell, ill give it one more try.

Took the drive out there from leeward, went up the stairs, and what do you know, he was very nice to deal with.  Asked a few questions about the rifle, he handed it over for me to inspect without any pestering or condescending comments, then he gave me a good deal..... he even threw in 3 or 4 boxes of match ammo for me to try out.

I must have gone there on a good day or something.

When he's on his meds, he's tolerable.

WGS, KGS, Magnum, OGC, SEC. YG.. I've been to these gun shops more then a few time and got excellent services. The more newer ones I haven't visited yet except xrings, I've only been to xrings twice but they are pretty friendly!...

X-Ring is good but doesn't usually have anything I want. The $659 lower receivers turned me off.

What lower was that?

I know during the craziness someone had to buy some lowers off GB
And paid dearly.

I've acquired firearms from OGC, YG, TGS, WGS, X-Ring, and KGS.  Every shop has good guys there.  KGS has gotten a little intense but he's never offended me.  But I don't get easily offended.  I think I've gotten deals on all my purchases. Service is best at X-Ring in my opinion.  But I like them all.

X-ring due to customer service. Dex and Brian are helpful, don't come across as know it alls, if there's something they're not sure of, they don't hesitate to tell you they're not sure and will find out for you..  Fair prices and  also eye candy haha!

Young Guns and Security equipment (from whom I dealt with) also has a friendly staff and fair prices..
Honolulu Firearms? ( old Magnum) i had a pleasant experience there as well..

If it came down to it I'd much rather pay a little more at one of these shops vs even a cheaper price somewhere that comes off as know it alls and treat you in a condescending manner... granted, its sad that a shop could give that image from possibly just one or a couple of bad apples if that's the case...

Blue water hunter up by costco in kona sells guns? Wow gotta check that out next time I'm in Kona. I've only stopped there a few times to get spearfishing gear while diving in Kona, but never really looked around.

[edit]

Haha just checked online, blue water hunter and blue water hunter outdoors are two different stores

Blue water hunter and blue water outdoors is the same store they just have different websites.

I am honestly not a fan of any of the local gun shops on the big island... Every time I walk into one I feel like I am getting screwed, probably why I never buy anything except ammo and the only reason I do that is sports authority which sadly has the best ammo prices, hasn't had anything new for damn near 9 months and I have no other choice! I suspect the weasely guy that works there just buys it all for himself because I go in there and check weekly and its like they just have a picture tacked up where the ammo is because it never changes.  The prices are usually just outrageous at the LGS. Once in a while there are decent prices on some items. I did buy some Gen 3 Pmags at blue water hunter for 15 bucks each which, while not a steal I thought it was at least competitive and reasonable, and they are friendly though overpriced. The other local shop which says on their website "we have the best prices on magazines near wholesale we will not be beat!!" was $20 each for the same thing on the same day. I asked if that was the best price he would do (afterall he does claim he won't be beat) the answer was a definitive no. And the place doesn't seem that friendly to me.   Then there's some items you look at the price tag and its like...  :o This is at all of them. Even sports authority selling an AR for $1600 I can get online for less than a grand.  ::)

It really does suck to not have a store I enjoy visiting. I'd be happy to support my LGS but not when it means paying 2,3,4,500 dollars more for a gun than what I could get it for online. Or accessories at or above MSRP. Now if I could just find an FFL that would have my gun ready in less than a week's time. Jury's still out on that one.

I just bought two 50rd boxes of FMJ 9mm Spear Lawman at Steubs for 40 bucks plus change. They actually have competitive prices compared to Sports Authority. I like Steubs they're friendly and helpful. Prices on their are reasonable as well however, if you can get it cheaper online plus shipping and FFL transfer fees then I say go for it. But I like to support the local gun stores here and there depending on their customer service. I haven't had any bad customer experiences from an LGS on the Big Island, just saw some ridiculous prices on certain things but i guess its the price we pay for paradise.

Everything in the islands is more expensive ugh. I just wish there was a public range in Hilo.

I’ve been to some big island gun stores.
Competitive prices.
I’ve seen Tokunaga store with Fed value bricks selling for sub $20 within the past 1 yr, Ruger 10/22 for 229.
I’ve seen Zane Sports selling a gun that nobody has anywhere on the web and at a competitive price.
I’ve seen JHara selling Savage MKII for 139, Hi Point 40cal Carbine for 289. No FFL fee and no shipping to add on.
Stuebs selling Kel-Tec pistols for sub 300.
They all sell good stuff.  You gotta be there at the right time.
I know a guy less than a yr ago who bought a shotgun (20G) for 80, he was at the “right place at the right time.”

I remember another time, while staying at the hotels nearby, just a 100 yds from King Kam is a little store called Elite Hunters, PMC .223 w/c was selling for $8.

I am not saying that all of the prices are good.  You got to be selective and patient, and if you don’t see what you want, ask anyway, might be in storage or be in a shipment coming over.

Another opportunity for a song.

It must just depend on what you are looking for because i have had very mixed experiences.

Jhara in hilo has far and away the best selection of ammo. They had OK prices on some .223 I bought but I looked at 45acp and 300WM they had in stock and I had to do a double take. Don't quote me but I think they had 50rd boxes of american eagle plain jane 230gr ball for I could swear it was between 40-50 dollars a box.

I just went to Kona Guns & Ammo web site.

It says that they have in stock Kel-Tec sub 2000, and Kel-Tec SU16.
2 very hard to get rifles even on Oahu.

Stopped by JHara today.  They had PMC .223 for 16.99 and Federal 5.56 for 17.99.  Had zero target 9mm, .40, or 45 (just JHP or Defense kine for super $$$).  FYI Winchester 9mm JHP was about $40.00 per box.  They do have some 30-30, 30 carbine, .270, and some bulk boxes of .380.

Haven't been to Stueb's in a while but their text said they just got some ammo in.

Solesource-- what did Zane have lost time you were there?  Anything interesting?  I used to go there quite a bit but he never had anything new.  But, the consignment guns were always interesting.
It is what it is.

I stopped by Honolulu Firearms yesterday to check out their prices and to shoot something I haven't shot in a long time at their range.  I have to admit that place is like night and day difference between Art and the current owners and employees.  I can't say that it's my favorite place but it's definitely up there now (at least for me).  I can also see myself picking up some items there since the prices on some of the items were very comparable, if not cheaper, than a few of the other stores.

 to them for great service and good prices.

I deeply agree. In fact it has gotten much better in recent months.
