Earplugs?
« on: July 16, 2013, 01:10:04 PM »
Which earplugs do you recommend? I've tried using the standard foam ones but they just pop out after a few minutes. Do the banded ones hurt your ears after time since it squeezes? Do they also hit your stock on rifles?

I was looking at these earplugs.

Are you putting them in properly?  Your supposed to spin them in your fingers til they get thin, put it well inside your ear, hold it there and let it expand.  Stays put if you do it this way.

Yes, that's exactly how I used them. After a few minutes of moving around they just pop out. Maybe I don't have normal ears. lol

I always double up (plugs + ear muffs), but I am a big fan of these ones:

Check out Plugz Hawaii.  My wife and I switched to his custom earplugs a couple years ago, they are well worth the price.  Only thing is he's on Maui but he does come down here for the gun shows.  Great product, excellent customer service, super cool dude.

Not sure about the brand. They look like these Surefire Sonic Defenders http://www.surefire.com/ep3-sonic-defenders.html but without the string that connects 'em.
Then ear muffs over them.

I use both Sound-Guard (the green & orange foamies) and Howard Leight "Max" (contoured orange foamies). Both work pretty well but can benefit from double hearing protection in high decibel situations. The trick is getting them in correctly, as mentioned you need to roll them & set them well inside the ear canal, trapped or held in place by the tragus. I've had them inserted for up to 12hrs on some of our longer flights, if they're in right they'll be quite comfortable. The only thing I don't care for as far as using them, you really want to keep your fingers clean when you roll them up... Nothing like introducing oil & grease into your ear

I use something similar to the first one. Got it at Gaspro and  for cheaper too ( about $2.50).  They have a lot of different choices. Don't like the ones that are corded, it makes a whistling sound when windy or walking.

I use standard foam earplugs with a NRR of 32db, you might not be inserting them fully. When you insert you sort of stretch out your ear with the opposite hand over the top of your head. I wear them not only shooting but also at work all day. no problems.  See:

https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+insert+earplugs&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

I also use earmuffs over the earplugs when shooting my 300wm rifle. These are the earmuffs I use

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00009LI4K/?tag=2ahawaii-20

Bought them at home depot. Keep in mind when you use 2x hearing protection you cannot just add the NRR, but double protection does help.

I use plugs and ear muffs

i tried these
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00065TQCW/?tag=2ahawaii-20

OGC and YG has them by the cash register
they seem a little bigger than the usual disposable earplugs
or maybe with the squarish design, they fit more snug in my ears
