Which earplugs do you recommend? I've tried using the standard foam ones but they just pop out after a few minutes. Do the banded ones hurt your ears after time since it squeezes? Do they also hit your stock on rifles?

I use both earplugs and headsets when I'm able to. I use earplugs, only, when the headset interfere with the rifle's stock. I use the  3m Peltor Ultimate 10 headsets that is readily available and cheap. It does a good job at muffling the noise but it does hurt my head after prolonged use.  I was informed during the handgun safety training class that a great deal of sound is transmitted to your ear drums from your ears (i.e., the external part of your ears) alone and that covering your ears as opposed to simply plugging them is more effective at reducing noise levels. It's hard to imagine anyone shooting with their mouths open and tongue hanging out like KK does when going ape with his slidefire AK but keeping your mouth closed also helps.

I was looking at these earplugs.

I use the bottom ones when I shoot small caliber handguns and a combo of plugs and ear muffs when shooting long guns.  My hearing is important to me and I use it for work.  If I can't hear a heart murmur, its not good for me or my patients!

I primarily use a headset, but I'll occasionally double up with plugs when at the rifle range and I'm next to a guy with a loud muzzle device.  In those instances I'll use Surefire EP3s.  They fit me well and work well enough.  I'll occasionally use just the EP3 when I'm shooting on the Silhouette or bullseye pistol ranges.

I primarily use the electronic headsets when I'm teaching or training as I want to hear questions, range commands, etc loud and clear.
