Registration and BP Revolver
« on: July 18, 2013, 08:30:08 PM »
Hi,

I have a Blackpowder revolver.  My understanding is that Blackpowder guns don't need to be registered.  If I were to buy a conversion cylinder to convert to 45 colt, do I then need to register it?  If i have two revolvers, do they both need to be registered if I have one cylinder?  Note, the cylinder is a gun part and does not require an FFL.

Does anyone have any experience in this area?  If you have to register, do you need the permit to acquire, etc?

Thanks

If you covert it to fire self contained bullets it most likely needs to be registered.   I'm thinking with hawaiis sketchy law coverting it to take modern ammo would be illegal

You are correct, black powder revolvers and cartridge conversion cylinders do not need to be registered in Hawaii. But once you place the cartridge cylinder into the revolver it becomes an unlawful unregistered hand gun.

While you do not need to register black power revolvers it can get weird. I know of someone who had a temporary restraining order (TRO) slapped on him by his ex.. He had to turn in all his firearms and ammo to HPD. He also turned in a black powder revolver. Took a few years but he was able to get all his stuff back. But when HPD returned the guns  they issued permits. So now his black power revolver is registered.  I suspect getting this off registration will be difficult and unsure what is the procedure if the pistol is sold. I think HPD messed up and should have just return the revolver and issue permits for the other stuff as need and required by law.
