AR15: Would direct gas imp. be more accurate than piston?
« on: July 19, 2013, 08:02:23 AM »
Direct gas impingement more accurate (say for 200+ yards) than piston due to less moving parts?

Yeah or nay?

Nay.

If the piston version uses heavier components (buffer tube, and such), it reduces recoil and increases accuracy.  This is not from experience, but there have been "experiments" that show both can be equally accurate.

Alot of variables play into which one is more accurate.  But given two credible systems of each type I think they are neck and neck.

Here's a thread from awhile back which touches on this topic.

I'm still waiting for the piston dudes to show up at Puuloa prove it. We have a practice shoot 0700 Sunday 21 July. Course of fire is 200, 300 , and 600 yards.

I already have a piston. PWS.

Thinking about DI with a longer BBL.

Maybe 20"? 22?

Interested to see what results you get with the two types.

Barrel Harmonics

You mean the free floating in the DI, or you mean a longer BBL would negate DI accuracy due to resonance?

Due to the piston system it affects the barrel accuracy.

Notice there are no SASS piston guns?

Thanks guys.

Anyway I just watched this. Thousands and thousands of times he mentioned DI is maybe better.  :shaka:

Potentially yes, DI is going to have a slight edge on piston guns for the most part.  That's not saying though that a top notch piston gun couldn't outshoot a crap DI, but just with equal build, the DI has the advantage.

How much of an advantage?  I don't know first hand, it will probably vary from gun to gun.  I've heard everything from .5moa to a 2 moa difference.  But that was just reading various things on the gun boards.  I did a good deal of DI vs piston reading up on before settling with a DI gun.

yeah my AA gas piston outshoots my buddy's Colt AR15 match all day, it will smoke any regular AR at 200+

A lot of that depends on the shooter...personally, I don't have a lot of experience with piston guns, but as long as you keep your DI gun lubricated and clean, you should be able to shoot as well as a piston one. Just my humble experience.

I call BS.

If  piston guns were more accurate, they would be winning the NRA/CMP and Military matches. M1 Garand and  M14 had their day, but the winners are now DI M16A2 freefloated barrel guns and variants.
If you are a serious shooter, you would shoot for group sizes at distance and record hard data at known distances for different loads.

If tacticool combat cosplay plinking is your thing, that's okay.  But if you are claiming accuracy, then show some proof by winning some competitions or showing hard data.
Talk is cheap.

Sounds to me like you outshot your buddy, not your gun.  Have you had time behind his trigger as well?

I dont think so as we are both good shooters with lots of time pulling triggers and my piston AR was running cool without much oil even with 3 mags through it was still going strong if I had an acog type scope it would even shoot better

To say that a sample of one rifle out shoots another sample of one rifle is misleading.  In other words my piston / DI rifle out shoots my buddies piston / DI rifle means little in the overall picture of rifles.  However if you look at long range precision shooters as a group, be it competition, LE or Military you will find the overwhelming dominant choice being DI in a gas operated rifle in this platform.  And I am talking dominant as in 99% dominant.  This is a significant statistic to extract information from.  As for nutnfancy, he could say that the sky is blue and the grass is green and I would still be skeptical and would want to get my own eyes checked.
