OPINION: Frontsight focus versus "quick kill" instinctive shooting? (Read 5267 times)

So I have read differing opinion on frontsight focus, versus focusing ALWAYS on the threat and just point and shoot instinctively when the milliseconds count and the brain is in survival mode.

Your thoughts?

Would depend on the situation.  If they are within a few yards where every milisecond counts you can point shoot them.  If they are close and against a rock wall or other barrier, you can do that too.  However if they are more than a few yards away you should use your sights to guarantee a good well placed shot.  A miss or bad short will not do anything no matter how fast you get the shot off.  You don't have to get perfect sight alignment depending on the range.

Another point is if you miss, you can hit innocents in the background.

Clear the holster and get muzzle up.
Don't shoot your support hand.
Move!

So need to practice this.

Depends on your skill level, how you train and distance.

Some people can very accurately point shoot all the way out to 25 yards.

I think you should include point shooting, front sight shooting and typical sight alignment in your training.

Practice all types at different distances and timed as well as untimed.

Point shooting is usually slightly fastest, front sight acquisition would be next and typical sight alignment slowest.

That is not to say that someone couldn't train to be just as fast employing any type of aiming as another.

Bottom line is train train train.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

As KK just stated, your technique MUST change according to the distance and situation.
And yes, if you are serious about using a handgun for self defense, you must practice a lot.

The only other technique to practice but not mentioned previously is the "Taylor Rock".

If you are competent at slow fire, then you should join a practical pistol club and have some fun and learn something along the way.
Then all this will be clear to you.

My opinion.............shoot as fast as you possibly can and still get rounds on target in a SD situation.

look at the front sight as fast as you can, and shoot quickly.
