Aloha gents, quick question. I've Been thinking about getting a ruger SR22 pistol for some time. Finding one on the big island is a PITA. I have a permit to purchase long guns at this time and I know the purchase hoops for hand guns when on island but that would be irrelevant to my current situation. I'm now in Washington state visiting family and it just dawned on me I can pick up that ruger here. My question; may I purchase the ruger and take it home via da lock box on airplane and just register it at my local police station when I get back to the BI without the added hoola?

Residents of a state other than Washington may purchase rifles and shotguns in Washington: PROVIDED, That such residents conform to the applicable provisions of the federal Gun Control Act of 1968, Title IV, Pub. L. 90-351 as administered by the United States secretary of the treasury: AND PROVIDED FURTHER, That such residents are eligible to purchase or possess such weapons in Washington and in the state in which such persons reside.

For a handgun, you would have the WA dealer ship it to a Hawaii FFL.  When you return to Hawaii, you go through the same permit to acquire/2 week wait/registration process naming the Hawaii FFL as the seller. 

I don't think a dealer in WA will transfer ownership to you directly, so you will not be able to take it on the plane.

You could just order it online. I have purchased from Buds before and i know they are one of the larger dealers. You will pay shipping and the FFL fee for your chosen FFL. Probably cheaper in the end than buying in WA then paying FFL fee 2x as well as shipping...

Yep... gave up my wa. State dl a few years back. Had to have shipped to ffl here on the big island. It cost $20 ffl fee here in hilo and $56 shipping for the ruger  sr22. $470 and some change total through cabellas.

Had I made the purchase there at cabellas and went through the 60 day wait for out of state id, there would have been an ffl fee in wa. about $100 and shipping $150 plus ffl in hilo another $20 so an ffl sale to an ffl dealer in Hawaii was much cheaper and quicker.
