Off Topic / Re: Boats?
« on: May 17, 2014, 07:37:43 PM »
As a member of the Coast Guard and since my main job is pollution response, my suggestion is to get a boat you can trailer. This way you can save some money with hull cleanings and slip fees. But there is the extra cost of truck, trailer and space to store it. If you get a boat, be prepared to spend THOUSANDS in upkeep and insurance, just in case. Do not cheap out on maintenance or I might be visiting you and sadly be required to fine you for polluting.

Hopefully this doesn't scare you. My dream is some day own a boat, but not one I would live in.

my landlords  switched to Hawaii telecom from oceanic. After a couple of day of installing new wire and such it worked pretty good. I was getting up to 30 mbps down and 3 mbps up. Then for the next two weeks it would slow down to the point where I couldn't even measure it (used speed test.com). Then it started working great again but between 15-20 down and 2 up, but never less never more. Think it was from them still installing it around the neighborhood. liked it, also got dvr and hd with it. Other than the initial hiccup, I liked it. This was also in Kailua.

I feel like the first year was nest, mostly cause of the live rock bands and the rain caused a big mud pit with lots of wrestling. Never heard about free turkey leg, just the beer.

I liked how many obstacles there were at Spartan, but felt it was boring after the race.

You should venture over the mountains, totally different world over there. I grew up in southeast corner of Washington, lots of farms and tumble weeds. And it gets HOT! like 110 at the height of summer. I will be transitioning to Portland soon and can't wait to be able to carry. Stay safe!

Whats the best place to buy around here anyways? I live on the Windward side and it seems Timuras has the most nonstandard selection that I just happened to see.

Guess I am still young cause I like a lot of the Acids, especialy the KubaKuba (they are really sweet). But I also like the meduros, most any brand that I have tried so far at least. I have to say the best cigar I have ever had was some I got in Panama while on patrol down there. I got a Cuban Cohiba #7 (I think #7), very nice after a long watch in the engine room thats 110+ degrees.

Legal and Activism / Re: Short barreled rifle

if the passage of laws in Washington state is anything like it is here in Hawaii, the governor does not need to sign bills in order for he bill to become law.  this is more of a passive action (i know it's an oxymoron).

a veto only happens when the governor chooses (active action) to veto the bill.  in that case, the legislature would need a super majority to overturn the veto.

Very true, any bill not signed within 30 days, it will become law. If he vetoes it, then the super majority comes into play.

Another reason to love home. Washington State house and senate passed a bill to allow sbr's. Just needs the governors signature, and even if he doesn't  sign it there should be enough support to over turn the veto. Only 3 voted against it I guess.

Off Topic / Re: 170,000 tons of gold in Hawaii bank vault
« on: February 24, 2014, 04:13:27 PM »
Okay I am gonna call BS on the 170,000 tons of gold. That would be 340,000 pounds of gold a standard gold bar weights 27.431 pounds, so that's 12,394 bars. The Gold Depository at Ft. Knox is reported to have 5,046.3 tons of gold there. The US supposedly has 8,133.5 tonnes total, it is doubtful that BoH has 171,000 tons in it vaults.

She went full retard, never go full retard.

They didn't time any of the heats, they just took the names of the first 25 finishers. Also they had no power for the clocks they had on the course  :wtf: For the price of the entry fee they should automatically have timing chips included.

Well, next up is the Spartan Race in March and the Warrior Dash was my official start to training for the Spartan  :shaka:

Weird, they had timing chips the first year I went, and you had to turn those in to get your free beer. Maybe their shipment didnt come in or something. When I got home I opened my free t shirt to find out they gave me a girls shirt! Dont know how that happened since they had seperate lines for male and femal.

So how did you guys do?

I ran in the 8am competitive wave, came in 6th and qualified for the Warrior Dash World Championships.

Not bad for one week of training  :shaka:

Did worse than my first time, around 50 min, legs were really stiff and I couldn't  keep running, Probably cause I am not used to running in grass and crowds. Had a great time as usual though. I didn't realize that not all waves were timed, so wife was a little bummed out. Luckily my buddy had a watch to time us.

I haven't really been "training" for it but my 2 mile time is 15 min, so maybe my 4 mile time would be around 30-40 minutes. Of course the mud pits and obstacles should make for a fun distraction and slow me down a bit!  ;D

Ya, my groups "signficant others" have all been upto something lately...pretty sure they're making some god awful costumes for us guys to wear!

Should be interesting, I just hope I can come out of it with a lil dignity intact...lol!!  :o

you only need 23 shots out of 40 to qualify for rifle marksman in the Army; 26 if its a paper qual. Pistol is even worse, with I think with 26 out of 50 on paper targets, and 16 out of 30 for the combat pistol course. And none of these qualifications really require that you know how or why your weapon system functions, or any other additional information that might be vital to the safe operation and utilization of the firearm.

Seriously? They only need to be in the target area or are you saying 26 in the 10 point area and the rest can be fliers???

I think a resposable gun owner would seek out all the knowledge they can about state specific laws, but now everyone is like that. So a class on that would be good in my opinion.

Yeah I believe this just a courtesy.  Of course, if we have police, I guess we could argue that we are a law enforcement agency.

Guess so, HPD just made their own rule saying they would accept military training and this law is just making more offical?

Everyone getting ready for this? Ran 4 miles in 50 the other day, so I am hoping to improve from my last Warrior Dash time of 44:13. Wife wants to dress in costume for some silly reason, not sure what yet though.

I thought the commercial was great, including all the languages. Everyone has to remember that we are a country  of immigrants. I grew up in a very white conservative (for Washington)area that pretty much only spoke english. I remeber going into middle school and there were ESL students who spoke Ukrainin/Russian since they had recently moved from that country. I thought it was awsome and was actually jealous.

I am going to have to read that articel when I get home now. My wife went to that office and she never felt anything was weird like over treatment, but that could be because we have tricare (dont know how it ranks against other dental insurance with payment).

Off Topic / Re: Does Hawaii have the stupidest drivers in the nation?
« on: January 24, 2014, 08:47:33 AM »
Completly agree, Hawaii has "stupid" drivers and other places have aggressive drivers. I think part of it has to do with lack of ability to drive long distances on real freeways and the much slower speeds driven here (at least on Oahu). And sadly the people here do perpetuate the stereotype of Asian and female drivers. Less than 6 months till I PCS out of here and get back to what is "normal" driving to me (hopefully).
