inexpensive????ak47 ... you ever try to buy one lately? cheap maybe from that kid in somolia
From a government or military prospective they are very inexpensive, relative to the west. They are still recycling 1950 era AKs and using them on the battlefield in many countries. The only reason we pay a lot in the US is because of commercial demand.

Or... You could just get a sig 556, and be done with the whole thing.

I thought this question was already solved once and for all, case closed.

It's the Ham Sammy reliability and accesory interfaceability of the AK hands down.

It is nice to find a genuine, unbiased comparison once in a while, instead of the usual BS from guys with axes to grind...   ;D

That's a great video Darmok.

I think the guy shooting the AK just sucked at shooting.

At 200 yards I can hit the "kill zone" 10 out of 10 times.

Now 400 yards is a whole other story for me (with iron sights) though I've seen guys make a 4-5" group at 400 yards with an AK and iron sights.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

That's pretty impressive at 400 yds with iron sights!

Depends on the situation/purpose....if i'm competing for accuracy, then AR....end of the world scenario that i can have only one rifle, then ak, easier to maintain, less parts to break, more rugged

Yeah but he's a Marine.  He can shoot a gnat at 300 with a rubber band gun.

On top of being a Marine, he's Travis F***ing Haley, so you can probably push that 300 out to at least 1,200.

I don't know how big the gong at Kokohead is (225 yards)
But I can hit it 10 out of 10 times with my AK (no scope)

Some days I like chocolate and some days I like Vanilla.  Having both in the freezer to chose from is a good thing.  :)

While I like both platforms, I'm an AR-15 guy if I had to choose.  There's nothing wrong with AKs, I love them too.  I just find the ergos of the AR-15/M16 platform all around better.  I don't have any problems with 5.56/.223 caliber, especially since I'm not limited to FMJ ammo myself.  I much prefer a lighter, flatter shooting round.

I think the main difference I see between the two, is an m16 is better if you are equipping a person, the AK is better if you are equipping an army.

As for long distance shooting with AK's, I know they can be done.  I've seen it done.  I've seen my buddy hit the 440 yard gong with his wasr-10.  The trick is knowing the range and your holdovers.  Them problem is, with a standard 50/100 yard zero, after about 200 yards, you start measuring the drop in feet instead of inches.

I know my AK will quit having "optic envy" once I get a red dot for it since it's outnumbered 3-1.   ;D

Both of these platforms are excellent and in the right (well trained) hands, are extremely effective.

I think the problem is the idiotic stereo types that ignorant people perpetuate.

"AK's are horribly inaccurate and you can't hit anything with them"

"AR's are jamo-matics, one grain of sand in the works and your gun will jam"
