What kind of case is legal ? ( and what to name it )
« on: August 27, 2013, 04:02:30 PM »
good conversation from another thread.

http://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=10582.0

 "Enclosed container" means   ( http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol03_Ch0121-0200D/HRS0134/HRS_0134-0023.htm )

- a rigidly constructed receptacle,
- or a commercially manufactured gun case,
- or the equivalent thereof that completely encloses the firearm

Members reported getting different answers from different people (trainers, RSOs, LGS employees, LEO, etc) and there was a lot of discussion.

What is an enclosed container ? ( As defined above, includes equivalent thereof )
Is a guitar case legal ?
Briefcase ?

Pretty much, for sure, a commercially manufactured gun case is legal. ( Soft or hard )
What else ?

I got a cordless drill case I want to modify to hold a pistol.
Seems legal as it's a rigidly constructed receptacle.
( of course transport will only be to and from legal places )

No need to start a new conversation, sir. You're only going to get the same answers.

I think any answer you get will just be an opinion of that person you ask, and it'sup to you to accept it or not

My hypothesis is that, yes you may use that drill case for your firearm.  I would

All I'm looking for is hypothesis. ( Thanks Dirsh )
Whatever anyone does is their own decision.

I'm pretty sure the Joe Biden Double Barrel of Justice defense doesn't work.

But there was some good conversation in that thread that I didn't think other members participated in it due to the title.
It kind of went way more general than the original question.

If nothing else, this thread will direct memebers who didn't check out the other thread to it.  :shaka:

Me too Stang.
As of now, I"m not pushing any luck.

We got some expensive power tools at work which have nice cases.I can see one modified to carry firearms.as long as you de-badge it and the shape of it does not resemble a shape of something (say a circ saw)that way it's not deceiving.its just a square case I don't see why it wouldn't be ok

So if I de-badge my Dewalt screwgun case should I mark the outside with the words .50Cal Desert Eagle or maybe Head Removal Tool?

There's a whole 'nother thread.

What to name your de-badged gun case.

Not endorsing any of these, but just to contribute:

1.  At the gun shows, HPD has a roll of butcher's paper.  If you buy a gun and have no case, they'll wrap it up and watch you walk out the door;

2.  I know of one high school riflery team that transports their rifles in cases designed for musical instruments.  The coach says this significantly cuts down on hassles while traveling.

3.  I occasionally use my motorcycle to get to the range, and sometimes it's with longarms.  For those times, I have two cases.  One is just a rube of 8" PVC with endcaps (one screw-on) and a shoulder strap; the other is a half-set golf bag.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.
