By law , they must arrest you and have the firearm seized as evidence.
Or without all the paperwork and simplify things , they just confiscate it.
Or to be helpful reture it to you and say make some corrections.

The last time I talked to the sergeant, the lower receiver must have the magazine permanently attached before the lower can be registered. The magazine must be solidly WELDED to the lower, no epoxies will be accepted. He implied that the only receivers that are being approved are using the billet magazines. The billet magazines that I have seen cannot be disassembled after welding to the lower. Anyone want to share their experience with attaching the magazine and registering? Please post as It may be helpful information to others.

the billet magazine I welded to the receiver was a clamshell design - two halves being held together with about 6 machine screws
I welded only one side of the magazine to the receiver - the second side is still able to be removed to service the spring/follower.
it is a long weld across the whole side so when fully assembled, it is stiff with no flex

you can hopefully see that the weld extends across the entire length of the mag/receiver mating point

Quote from HRA website: Hawaii state law prohibits greater than 10 round detachable pistol magazines (including rifle magazines capable of use in any pistol, such as the AR-15/M16, AK, M1 carbine, H&K carbine, Thompson, and aftermarket Ruger .22 magazines) unless blocked to hold 10 rounds or less and “not readily restorable”. Possession of illegal magazines is a misdemeanor, and possession of a handgun with one inserted is a class C felony. There is much debate among gun owners, law enforcement, and dealers over the interpretation of this portion of the statutes when rifle magazines which fit handguns are considered, and the prohibition is not generally enforced.

I don't think it would be a good idea to build AR pistols with detachable magazines. The "not generally enforced" prohibition on greater than ten round capacity AR rifle magazines may then become enforced.

Good idea.  But you could just keep it limited to the Reduced Capacity 10 rounders.

When I asked HPD, their response is that since you cannot legally possess an AR pistol with detachable magazines, AR magazines are not pistol magazines.

Certainly not a defense in court, but as a practical matter they do not seem interested in enforcing at this time, and I imagine as long as nobody does something stupid to make them do so, it will not be an issue, but that's pure conjecture on my part.

Anyway, given how poorly written HRS 134-8 is, their stance makes sense. If the argument is that since it says "pistol" and does not specify "pistol otherwise legal to possess in Hawaii", I assume I could then manufacture a bunch of pistols designed to take all the major rifle magazines (not hard in a free state), and essentially ban all such rifle magazines in Hawaii - since there is now a pistol out there that is capable of being used with said magazines.

Which would be totally absurd and I doubt would stand up in court.

If a legal AR (or whatever you want to call them  ;) ) pistol was built with a detachable magazine, that may lead to the enforcement of possessing any AR magazine with a capacity greater than ten rounds a misdemeanor. I don't think anyone should consider building one. It would irritate HPD to do so and the retaliation would affect many.

Back from the dead. Can we have some one weld the magazine to the lower or we would have to weld it ourselves?

Has anyone thought of using this for their pistol build?

Would be good but I think those are steel, so no way to weld to your lower...  Now if they made aluminum mags like that...   :geekdanc:

Someone with more knowledge on this may correct me but I believe the weld needs to be continuous around the mag to the mag well on the receiver.

Baring the dissimilar metals mentioned by Heavies. If this mag was partially welded into a receiver do you think that it could still slide down to open with it being inserted.
