It seems like I have to take time off from work to go to any shop as their hours seem to match my work hours and none reopen on Sunday. What's up with that?

You have yet to discover Windward Gun Shop, then!  Closed Mon & Tues, open Sat & Sun.  Closest to Kokohead, definitely worth finding.  If for no other reason than you can pick up items on your way to the range!
Yup WGS open so early on weekends.  No matter when you go down on the weekends they'll be able to help you out.

Aloha,

I dealt with every gun store on this island. I like to say Carter and Eugene are  serious people and they should be dealing with guns.  Some people take that the wrong way.  I am younger shooter and  Carter kinda comes off to me as a uncle who is trying to help his nephew who doesn't know much and often tries to correct /lecture me on things.  I realized that he only does it because he cares. He has his own unique style of teaching and dealing with people and I respect & appreciate that.  He wouldn't act like this if he was a kinda person who didn't really care.   As for Eugene he is a good guy I think he one of the most knowledgeable person on this island who works with guns.  He is a humble guy and I look up to him as a younger shooter. When it come's to guns I prefer to deal with people who are serious!
I agree with you on point of view.  I don't think Carter means to come across as gruff/condescending, but in the eye of the beholder he does.  Unfortunately perception becomes reality.  Regardless of if he means to or not if the customer views it as such..........that's the way it is.

One member had said we should look at the positives...........so I'd vote Henry/Joe as the cheeriest.

Finally the gal at Young Guns.......Martha?..........she is very knowledgeable.  Sad to say it, but when HPD has questions, it's not uncommon for them to call her.  Pretty sad.

When I shop, I make it a point to know what I want, go to who has it, buy it, and be done with it. I don't go there to shoot the shit or buddy up the owner.

So some Gun Shop Guys in Hawaii are a-holes?  Join the crowd guys, there are Gun Shop Guy a-holes everywhere in these United States.  I expect every Gun Shop Guy I meet to try and convince me to buy a POS gun that he is stuck with.  So I go in the shop with the idea that if a gun I want is there, at the right price, I will buy it, regardless of the attitude and stupidity displayed by the Gun Shop Guy.

We're on the other end of the spectrum from ya"ll Hawaiians, down here in Georgia, but we all share the heartache of the Gun Shop Guy!

It's like I said...gun shop guys are only human. It doesn't matter where you go. I would rather deal with a guy thats an a-hole but knows what he's talking about. Buying guns & ammo should be all business and not feeling all "warm and fuzzy" after the sale.

Well there's "warm-n-fuzzy,"  and then there's, "I want to get a 10 yard running start so I can fly-kick you in the face!"  :grrr: transactions.

There's a happy medium somewhere in there.

This thread will not end well.

How about a poll of "Which store has the nicest owners or staff" or "which store has the best prices"  This "who is the grouchiest" is basically asking which store owner you think is the biggest asshole.  And so what?  What does it accomplish?  Everybody leaves with hurt pride and the community is a little more divided, with store owners a little more jaded and apathetic towards the customers they're looking to serve, because some anonymous asshole called them an asshole on an internet forum.

I've seen this happen before in another sporting community I was actively involved in: less than five stores on the island, and everybody had their favorite and everyone rallied around their championed store.  This split up the community, so much so that the stores could never work together to get big-picture things accomplished for the community at large.  It's stupid and a shame really when you realize what a small minority we are to begin with.

It is in my opinion, that religion, politics and favorite gun store all go into the same catagory: things you politely do not discuss with strangers or people you're meeting for the first time, because everyone has their opinion and everyone is firmly entrenched into their beliefs.

Is the "sporting store" you're talking about paintball stores? lol

I think Art is sorta trying to change his attitude.  I remember calling him and asking if he had a particular gun in stock and he was actually really trying to help me out.  He usually treats those that he knows that buys from him a lot better.  Which imo would come with any store owner eventually when you're dealing with items that so many people have an "interest" in and like to look and touch your products but rarely ever end up buying one.  I know i'd start to get irritated after a while.  I do agree, however, that his prices are ridiculous.  He needs to drop his prices about 20% across the board in order to compete with places like OGC..  and if he did he'd be making so much more money!

Attitude issues aside, he has been lucky to have the only indoor range available for actual use. Royal Hawaiian is attempting to go through changes as well to do more, but seem to be bound by anti-gun property owners.  Once OGC's indoor range opens magnum may have to rethink its business practice. I despise price gouging even more than I do attitude.  I can't hear you talk when I am shooting anyways :).   I won't, however, pay a rediculous increase in ammo prices to shoot.  Which is one thing I am glad Carter has expressed he wouldn't do (Price gouge people just to shoot indoors).  I think not doing this will bring him plenty of business.  In fact, I am actually concerned it may be too much business (at least on weekends).

i might have to go to Magnum just to see if all of the things I've been hearing about Art are even half true! EVERYONE (12+ people) I've talked to has steered me away from the place. Even if you go to his website, in the "sale" or "weekly specials" section of his website, the "sale" prices are the same, AND sometimes more than the retail prices!  unreal.

I know I ripped on Carter earlier but I feel a little remorse at not giving him his props in my initial post. I got a little defensive when he retorted and the positives I said about him didn't really come out too positive. For that Carter, my apologies. You are an honest business man helping to promote our rights, that's not ripping people off, and you offer some of the best prices in the state. I appreciate that.

Now let's clarify something.

Art does not gouge his ammo prices just to shoot in his range.

His ammo prices are always that high.  :D

Art has been a douche since his days of selling car crap. If you decide to go, just keep in mind however his crew treats you...Art is 100x worse. Taking d-bag 101 is a prerequisite for working there. Seriously, I don't know how they stay in business. Probably a side deal with HPD on top of tax evasion.  ;D

I know stores keep hours to when they will have the most business, but is there some law that regulates when they can operate? My wife and I wanted to do a little gun shopping today but no one is open. It kills me! It seems like the Internet is going to be the only way I'm going to be able to even start to buy, at least I can do that part without missing any work.

I recall Warren the owner of the now long gone Armory was a real scum bag. He would give Art a hard rub. Warren was a completely changed man during his fire sale. I could not believe how helpful and willing to please he became. I guess he really needed the money badly when the feds got after him for various charges. I think this was the motivation behind his change in behavior.
