Does the IRS disproportionately target people who applied for permit to aquire ? (Read 3858 times)

with only about 1% of individual tax returns audited per year in this country , i'm curious to find out how many people applied for a permit to acquire in 2013 only to be audited on their 2012 tax forms .

I'm single, i don't own a business or property , in 2012 i was a full-time student and made about $17,000 . .
I was audited and the IRS said i owed  $1,000 because they took away my education credit stating they couldn't verify i was in school for 2012.

With so much surveillance and everything else this day in age I find it hard to believe they couldn't see that i was in school ..
but regardless , i should be considered low risk for an audit based on the fore mentioned circumstances.

That's when it dawned on me that i had applied for a rifle permit at the start of the new year and by tax time 2013 I had a AK47 and a letter from the IRS saying i owed money  :(

I know it would be impossible for me to find out the actual statistics about this however i would like to hear what everyone thinks.
I have a suspicion that the IRS takes a special interest in people trying to acquire firearms and anything over 1% of the estimated 13,000 new permit holders being audited would prove it.

I'm pretty sure "they" know virtually everything about everybody, so it's mostly a question of someone somewhere in the hierarchy deciding who they want to "target". There is pretty clear evidence that political opponents have recently been targeted. Not sure how you'd be able to garner enough data to make the case that firearm owners were targeted... unless a whistleblower were to step forward. You'd certainly get nothing but denials from any official government sources. Most states don't have registration, etc., but any credit card purchases even in those states would be recorded. I guess we'll have to wait and see if many readers of this forum respond. Sorry to hear that you have to deal with "those people".  :shaka:

Adding a link to a story about surveillance and the government's (overly) broad definition of who qualifies as a "terrorist", and thus targeted for further surveillance: http://blog.joehuffman.org/2014/05/16/its-not-just-gun-owners-who-are-considered-terrorists/

Been in business since 1985, never audited by IRS.
If audited I have documents proving all business transactions / expenses.
If your education expense is valid, just provide registration receipt to IRS.
Therefore your $1000 tax credit should be refunded to you.
IMHO, being a firearm owner is not legal cause for tax audits.
If you get a credit refund, you can purchase another firearm  :D

But who knows -  4 me an AUDIT might be forth coming!   :grrr:

thanks for the replies ..

Not that I BELIEVE that there is a big conspiracy .
but the claim they are making is so absurd and easily disproved that once i thought about it , I found it compelling enough to look into...  or at least ask on a forum.
I sent them my school records and every payment i made since 2004 plus the names and numbers of my advisers  .. just waiting for the letter saying they still don't believe me.

Anyway , i was just curious if anyone else who got a permit was audited this year  ..

The last time i got a permit was was 5 years ago and never had a problem then.

it was just the only reason i could think of for them to even bother.

Don't know about permit seekers being audited at a higher rate, but it's been discovered that individuals belonging to Tea Party organizations were audited at 10 times the expected percentage.

Not sayin its true, but I just got audited, in all the years ive been working ive never been looked at before.....  coincidentally, I have been much more voiceful in matters of 2A, in matters of economy,  in mattrrs of tax, and I have been active in opposing these terrible times that has been forced upon us....  just sayin, I wouldn't be surprised.   What can one do....  keep on, keeping on...
