Possess a machete in New York and you may soon spend a year in jail. (Read 8846 times)

Wow.... seriously? Most items in a hardware store could be "potentially lethal"
What are gardeners supposed to use if they cannot use anything potentially lethal?

Quote
Under Avella’s proposal, possessing a machete could lead up to a year in jail.

....“The fact that anyone can easily purchase this potentially lethal tool is just crazy,” he said.

“I didn’t even know it was possible to buy a machete online,” Terrance’s mother, Greta Price, told the Daily News. “I had no idea that it wasn’t considered a deadly weapon. It should be.”
“He’d still be alive today if it wasn’t for a machete.”

And thats where the snowball starts....tragedy indeed but victim's family and friends should look at the root cause of crime - humans

Yes, we all know that people kill people, not the various tools they use, BUT if they weren't allowed to possess the more lethal weapons (e.g. "assault weapons of war", "high capacity ammunition feeding devices", rifles with barrels under 16", machetes, hammers, fists and feet, etc.) then those criminals could harm fewer people before victims could escape or thwart the criminal's continued violence. Thus the need to limit machetes to under 4" (with full registration, background check, fingerprinting, photographing, relinquishing of rights to privacy re all medical records, waiting period, etc.); screwdrivers, ice picks, kitchen knives, chisels, etc. to under 2"; hammers, garden tools, etc. to under 8 ounces, etc. No one needs a machete with a 12" or 18" blade, nor a six inch long kitchen knife or screwdriver or ice pick. All lethal tools outside the range of the new limits must be turned in, or face felony charges. This is merely common sense lethal tool safety regulation. It will save lives, and if it even saves one life it is worth it.

We all knew it would happen.   Just like in England, "Surrender your knife"!   http://www.thedailysheeple.com/is-this-a-joke-british-police-push-for-ban-on-pointy-knives_112014

In Australia, if you keep a hammer by your bed for protecion, that's big time illegal.   Better have some nails and wood in the bedroom as well.

Seriously, a hammer? What are you allowed to keep then in Australia?

Maybe now would be a good time to buy stock in a machete company because people will go out and buy them en mass? Seriously, how will they do yard work?

... some follow-up/clarification.  The actual proposal is viewable by clicking on a link in the article, above.
I'd like some politician who sponsors these sorts of laws to explain why hammers, screwdrivers, and kitchen knives aren't on the list. Thanks. Well, if any such politicians are reading this forum...

These idiots should work on banning cars, then. Isn't a two ton moving platform made of steel a lethal object waiting to he yielded as a weapon?

Don't forget swimming pools/bathtubs and household poisons, etc. which kill more people, especially children, than firearms and machetes, etc. The thing is, we need cars, right? Please re-read: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear needed arms, shall not be infringed."

While you're at it, might as well put a ban on the internet.  If done so, it will 100% stop cyber-bullying.
