What do you expect from a school whose mascot is the anteater?

I wonder how they would like to lose federal funding if they don't fly the federal flag? I forgot we still have Obama in office.  :shake:

Those students should be kicked out of the country.  Obviously they don't know what it stands, or don't care...

Yup I seen videos of anti american protesters getting chased and beaten by vets for stomping and disecrating that flag, but they were still breathing so they got off too easy...lol, I'm glad at least one kid stood up for the flag and I hope he gets help from the ROTC program

I know I'll be raising a glass to Mr. Zomorrodian.

protected by free speech, and it's their prerogative.  you dont have to lick a country's boots to be a part of it.

you dont have to like it.  but saying people should be kicked out a country based around free speech because of something trivial (and to wit, was not a desecration of the flag, though that is still protected) is a terrible attitude.  it is their right to do so.  you dont have to like it, but you do have to deal with it.  its part and parcel with all the freedoms YOU get to enjoy.

and also, how is that type of criticism any different from those of us here who relentlessly criticize the president or the government (as they SHOULD be criticized)?  it isnt, you're just passing judgements on the criticisms you don't believe in in when it does absolutely nothing against your freedoms.  both sides are expressing displeasure towards the government.  it is theirs, and our right to do so.  if we get to complain, they get to complain.  it doesnt even matter if they're wrong.

defending your country is one thing.  being proud of your country is another.  but blind patriotism is worse, especially when it's selective (see:  how so many people complain about the "police state" but then turn around and suck up to the military or whatever).

i don't agree with their actions.  it's frivolous, and if visiting students cant handle the flag of the country that graciously allowed them to study there, they need to reconsider their attitude.

but this quote from the article...

Quote
“The American flag has been flown in instances of colonialism and imperialism,” he bemoaned. “Flags not only serve as symbols of patriotism or weapons for nationalism, but also construct cultural mythologies and narratives that in turn charge nationalistic sentiments.”

well, there's truth in that.  I'm with Zomorrodian over all, but the opposition isnt exactly lying with that one.

i dont like what they're doing, but advocating deportation because they have the balls to critcize what THEY personally feel is an issue is disgusting, and i find it amazing that a group of people so invested in the defense of the second amendment on constitutional grounds aparently dont mind restricting the first because they dont like what someone said.

granted, its a bit easier for me to stay objective on this since it's going to get vetoed anyways courtesy of Zomorrdian and its not going to get the 2/3rds majority.

You can't sanitize history or eradicate all symbols of the HOST nation.  If non-US citizens wish to be in a setting without reminders they are in a foreign land, TOUGH!!  There are plenty of LEGAL immigrants who love this nation enough to learn our laws, civics lessons, history, and language well enough to assimilate into our fabric.  They all came here hoping for a better life, because the freedom and opportunities we offer don't exist where they came from.

To then pretend our national identity OFFENDS anyone is just about the most ignorant thing anyone could ever believe.  Our national identity is the REASON the vast majority of these people flock here.

If America is such an offensive place with our symbols of freedom and history, why are SO MANY people around the world willing to risk everything to become Americans or enter the country illegally?  Think about it.

just an aside:  "trigger" culture pisses me off.

anytime i see a "trigger warning" on a facebook post, i immediately ignore.  if you're going to talk about rape, or abuse, or death or whatever sensitive subject you want, just tell people straight up instead of acting like you have to beat around the bush in case someone gets accidentally offended.  if you're not insulting someone or being an asshole, and someone has a problem with it, it's THEIR problem.

I would say that even if you, or anyone, IS insulting someone or being an asshole, it's still their problem.
That's really the wonderful thing about freedom of speech, you also have the freedom to ignore what others say.
Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean someone can't say it.

Theoretically. Yes, they can say it, but they can also lose their job or be expelled from school, etc.

Just as, theoretically, we have the right to bear arms.

yeah, but if youre intentionally being a dick or insulting someone, then you're still WHY they should be offended.  You're the cause.  Im saying that when you talk about something and someone says it triggered them unintentionally, it annoys me when they blame the person who said it like they did it on purpose, like people are supposed to walk on eggshells all day long because they might run into a mugging victim or spmething.

What's wrong with this Generation?  All generations have issues and the geezers always say the latest generation cannot live up to their own, however I say this as a big generalization, but this sums it up for me in regards to the current crop of younger people....

- Entitled.
- Lazy.
- Everyone gets a trophy (maybe falls under entitled), why should I actually work for anything, I am going to get a trophy anyway.  God I hate AYSO, I9 etc, and why the hell do you have to do a damn food service after every game?  Damn kids show up just to get their medal or trophy and eat pizza afterwards.  Many could give a rip about playing the actual game and never mind about the score and actually trying to win.
- Over sensitive (too worried about political correctness and driving the concept).
- Too much tech, not enough hands on.
- Raised by parents who thought that spanking was illegal or not the right way of parenting and that "time outs" work.
- Taught by a generation of teachers / professors who are slanted the wrong way.
- Not enough pride in, or knowledge of American history and don't give a shit.
- Think that socialism works.  Don't know enough about world history.

There is more, but that sums it up.

LOL!!!  I was ready to actually post this a couple of nights ago and last night.  I had it all typed up but never clicked on "post".  I actually didn't want anyone to get buthurt, cry to an adult and give me a time out.
