Those students should be kicked out of the country. Obviously they don't know what it stands, or don't care...
protected by free speech, and it's their prerogative. you dont have to lick a country's boots to be a part of it.
you dont have to like it. but saying people should be kicked out a country based around free speech because of something trivial (and to wit, was not a desecration of the flag, though that is still protected) is a terrible attitude. it is their right to do so. you dont have to like it, but you do have to deal with it. its part and parcel with all the freedoms YOU get to enjoy.
and also, how is that type of criticism any different from those of us here who relentlessly criticize the president or the government (as they SHOULD be criticized)? it isnt, you're just passing judgements on the criticisms you don't believe in in when it does absolutely nothing against your freedoms. both sides are expressing displeasure towards the government. it is theirs, and our right to do so. if we get to complain, they get to complain. it doesnt even matter if they're wrong.
defending your country is one thing. being proud of your country is another. but blind patriotism is worse, especially when it's selective (see: how so many people complain about the "police state" but then turn around and suck up to the military or whatever).
i don't agree with their actions. it's frivolous, and if visiting students cant handle the flag of the country that graciously allowed them to study there, they need to reconsider their attitude.
but this quote from the article...
“The American flag has been flown in instances of colonialism and imperialism,” he bemoaned. “Flags not only serve as symbols of patriotism or weapons for nationalism, but also construct cultural mythologies and narratives that in turn charge nationalistic sentiments.”
well, there's truth in that. I'm with Zomorrodian over all, but the opposition isnt exactly lying with that one.
i dont like what they're doing, but advocating deportation because they have the balls to critcize what THEY personally feel is an issue is disgusting, and i find it amazing that a group of people so invested in the defense of the second amendment on constitutional grounds aparently dont mind restricting the first because they dont like what someone said.
granted, its a bit easier for me to stay objective on this since it's going to get vetoed anyways courtesy of Zomorrdian and its not going to get the 2/3rds majority.
