300 BLK Big Fan or all Hype?
« on: May 19, 2015, 11:50:39 AM »
Thinking of getting into 300 Blackout. However, not sure. Can invest in reloading the 300 BLK but is it really worth it. I'm in Ohio now and see the price at cheap $20 and most match at $45 per 20 rd. All sold out also. Why not just stick with 308 if it's about the same price?

same mags and lower as an AR
lots of range in weight of "projectile", so you can load subsonic all the way to max velocity
less powder usage

i had the chance to shoot some subsonic rounds, and we were all laughing after every shot

if you plan on just shooting supers a carbine gas length will work. if you want to playing with subs and supers it would be easier with a pistol gas length plus 1 in 7 or 8 twist.
easy to reload for and easy to form brass from 223.

I'm a BIG FAN of the 300 BLK cartridge. My favorite loads consist of either Sierra 125gr MK or the Speer Hot Cor 130gr flat point or JHP.The Speer bullets are the most accurate out of my rifle. I prefer using H110 powder. Including the cost of the brass which I purchased for $0.10 each, I am reloading this round for $0.49/round. Much cheaper than you can buy new ammo for. It is well worth reloading for this round. Winchester 296 is pretty much the same thing as H110. Also, IMR4227 works well with this round. I have yet to try Lil Gun. I load only supersonic rounds because they are cheaper.

I brought a few old hard drives to the range one day to destroy so I didn't have to worry about my data being mined from them. I hung them in my frame per the rules. My .223/5.56 AR poked .22 caliber holes in them. But the 300 BLK blew large half inch and larger holes in them. I'm thinking this round in JHP would be a good pig gun up to 150 or 200 yards.

Any more people getting into 300 BLK?   I'm starting to think about trying but bullets (for reload) still expensive.   I may be wrong but 16" barrel seems like the only option for 125 gr. ammo.   Would swapping the barrel from a mid 1990's era Bushmaster A3 upper work?
That way if 300 BLK dies out, I'm not out big bucks.   Complete 300 BLK uppers selling for over $1000.

I am sure if you look hard you can find a complete 300 BLK upper selling for over $1000 but if you look harder you can find them starting around $400 and up. My first Google search netted one on sale at Midway for $399. And you can find one for less without the BCG and charging handle. You can use the BCG and handle from your 223/5.56. They are exactly the same. If you want to change out the barrel, you can do that, too. I am sure for even less.

What is the basis for your statement "I may be wrong but 16" barrel seems like the only option for 125 gr. ammo." ?

Looking at 300 BLK barrels online are either pistol lengths or 16" and for HI 16" is the only option.   Looking to shoot  125 gr. weight ammo.   Also what is the recommended feed ramp design and gas length for 16" barrels?
I see some with carbine and some with pistol length gas systems.   Checked Midway and they do have better priced complete uppers.
My thinking is to take my time and buy the barrel parts then later rails, BCG, charging handle.

Sorry WhyNow? I do not know enough about building my own upper to be able to answer your questions. I purchased a complete upper for my project. I bought a CMMG 16" carbine length upper. Paid around $450 for it. I shoot only lighter (supersonic) 125gr-135gr heads.

Barrel length of 16" is probably limited by the design of the cartridge.

Depends what you want to use it for.

If you are looking for a subsonic suppressed round, it's pretty nice.  No sound, no flash, low recoil, light weight for the bullet weight.

If you're shooting long distance IMHO don't get it.

I think everyone is putting M4 feed ramps on their barrel extensions now. I don't know if it matters.
Go with carbine length gas with a carbine buffer. Pistol length is ridiculously short. I have a Wilson combat barrel with carbine gas and it works fine with lighter 125 grain bullets but short strokes with subsonic. If you have "short stroke" problems you can always drill out your gas port or fool with different buffers. I've read that subsonics work better with a suppresser.

I hope that answers some of your questions. 300blktalk.com is a great source of information.

There's a lot more to ballistics than bullet weight and speed.
