Why every gun owner should join HRA & HDF
« on: December 10, 2015, 08:51:31 PM »
In reading the post "Kalihi Valley #16 Neighborhood Board Meeting"
K9 commented "I'm finding that the firearms community is vocal on these forums, but lack action. If anyone really cared, that room would have been filled to the brim. I was not going to devote a large amount of time to an issue that one person showed up for, when there were others there for U.S. Senator Schatz presentation, or the Nextera takeover, and other issues. That's just how things are."

The impression seems to be that we as gun owners don't care that much to do anything. I personally don't think that is the case. That is why I believe that no matter how one feels about NRA, HRA, or HDF (some my not like the activities, people who attend, etc) it is so important that everyone that owns a firearm or likes or supports the shooting sports, whether for sport or defense or other, should join both the HRA & HDF.
These are two local organizations that directly look out for and try to defend our 2A rights right here in Hawaii.
We live in a gun unfriendly state.  I recently read that there are more guns in Hawaii then people.
Just imagine if all the owners were members of both organizations.  I'd like to believe that the politicians would take notice since we are also (i hope) a voting block of the population.

While the monetary contribution helps these  organizations, having all gun owners in Hawaii united, banding together for the same cause, makes people take notice. As long as we are all independent or small loosely organized groups we are not considered a force to be reckoned with by the politicians or others.

Just my opinion. Not trying to offend anyone or start a pissing match.

and yes, I am a member of both HRA & HDF

indeed, financial support is very important for getting a dedicated voice to pushing these issues. Everyone is busy but if everyone donated the equivalent of their pay for 2 hours a month both of these organisations could have full time representatives dedicated to being at not only neighborhood board meetings but city council and legislative hearings.

HDF, HRA, NRA.

I'd also like to point out that if we were all on the same page, we would represent one of the largest voting blocs in the state.

Always meant to join HRA/HDF,  read through this thread and finally signed up with both.

Thanks Edster.
You hit the nail on the head.  That is my point with this post.

Thanks myanmar1 for joining.
If this post helped one person join it's a plus. Hopefully it will reach out to others.
Thanks again. Encourage anyone you can to join.

Thanks Dogman.
You're right it should be a no brainer.  Wish everyone would feel the same.

We all need to be on the same page. We all need to band together and support both HRA and HDF (NRA is a given). Like I said these two organizations work for us right here in Hawaii.  There is strength in numbers and if everyone were to join we would be a group to be reckoned with. It's easy for the politicians and HPD to blow us off and pass stupid stuff if we are not united.

Based on my own experiences meeting local firearm enthusiasts, there are many who have never heard of 2aHawaii, therefore there are many who will never read this topic. I have participated in HRA Fun Shoots and HDF Range Days and plan to continue to participate when I can. When I go to the pistol range at KHSC it's usually at the end of the day and I will be there for the final relay. I always observe a couple or a group that are new to shooting and they make remarks about their lack of skills and experience. I tell them about 2aHawaii and membership with the HRA and HDF and the shooting events where experienced enthusiast and instructors are always willing to help out new shooters and offer shooting tips in a safe environment. I also mention how fun it is being able to shoot at seven to ten yards instead of 25 all the time.

Soooo...if the HRA and HDF were to produce a single flyer combined with both of their basic membership and events information along with information of the existence of 2aHawaii, we could all keep a few of these flyers in our range bags. WHEN we happen to be next to one or more of these new to the sport enthusiast when could mention the Fun Shoot and Range Day and present them with a flyer so they won't have to rely on their memory. I am sure HDF and HRA personnel will see this post and I will contact both... if the members here would be willing to keep a few flyers in their range bags and hand them out when the opportunity presents itself. The flyers could be distributed at HDF and HRA events or maybe at LGS. Good idea? Unrealistic? What do you say?

There is no question that anyone that supports the 2nd Amendment in its entirety, being a part of all three organizations is a duty.  However, the mere fact that the HRA and HDF are two independent organizations clearly shows that not everyone is on the same page.  I am familiar with some people who are long-time members of the HRA who are in agreement in principle with the HDF, but will not become official members.  As someone who is a member of both, I do see subtle differences in both organizations.  Having said that, this no excuse for anyone not supporting both organizations, but merely shedding light for the entire firearms community to rethink and realign their positions for the greater cause.

so dog you mean something like this? We have been passing these out for the past 3 years at the gun shows. And your idea of carrying a few to the range is a excellent suggestion.

Yes, something like that. I had in mind HDF, HRA and 2aHawaii on one flyer with basic information to hand to someone who might be interested in something besides target shooting. At the very least give me some of your flyers and I will keep them in my range bag and I can hand them out to interested shooters I meet at the pistol range. For some reason I get into conversations with new shooters at the pistol side, but rarely at the rifle side.

I've been debating on joining the HRA but I am on the Big Island and have no desire to relocate to Oahu. Anyone else on the Big Island that's a HRA member? The shooting/hunting community here is huge but unorganized given no actual public range like Oahu. (Maybe the 'man' wants it that way to prevent the 2A community from coming together.) I've only heard about the HRA through 2AHawaii. But just hanging out at a LGS here I've met all types of people that are all very concerned about their 2A rights. Might be in HRA's benefit to organize something on the Big Island to rally the 2A supporters here. Just my 2cents. If there is a big island rep for the HRA anyone have their contact information?

Thanks everyone. I hope everyone had an awesome Christmas.

Here is a link to HRA contacts. There are two representatives in Kona, and one in Hilo.

Aside from the flyers, more shirts and weatherproof stickers for both the HDF and 2aH, pretty please!
Will happily rock those till the cows come home. (Seeing as how I don't currently live on a farm, it would be a good long while.)

I myself can't be active on the activist front but I CAN and would absolutely support as much as I could in other small ways. Not just in purchasing swag but in donations (monetary or otherwise).

Perhaps more advertisement of the events are needed? Not advertisement as in ad ads, but in showing more of the events themselves on social media.... range days, and even of the classroom events.

If it's ever needed, I could donate time as an event photographer on the weekends or weekday afternoons. Not claiming to be a paid professional but I've been doing it as a hobby for well over 20 years and my camera gear (Canon DSLR) and editing programs (Lightroom and Photoshop Elements) are more than enough to get the job done. I have regular portrait type lenses, a wide angle lens, as well as a 100-400mm L-series telephoto lens that allows me to shoot from far off if need be. If I can catch a shot like this from standing out on shore (photo attached), I think can catch a few good shots from up / down / side range. lol

Anyway, no pressure or anything.. just brainstorming ideas and making an open offer. Steve (macsak) has my info. Feel free to let me know anytime if you want me to come out and do test shots while you guys are doing your thing. :)

Hubby and I are members of the HDF and recently joined the NRA.
I signed up for a joint membership to the HRA after reading through this thread.
