My biggest problem with 22lr for home defense is the unreliability of the ammunition.  In either of my 22s I can expect a dud round almost every magazine which is not what I want to have happen when I need it the most.

Wow. I have had maybe one dud per a few bricks (over 1000 rounds). What kind of ammo are you using? I'll avoid those

Not that I recommend .22lr for home defense but if you have no other choices, I'd rather have a 22 than a stick.

You should try CCI mini mags. I run mini mags in all my 22's and I can honestly not remember the last time I had a dud round. Or if I've ever had one with mini mags.

It's like any other home defense ammo. Use good stuff.

That is with CCI minimags.  With my P220 22lr conversion I'm not surprised since its a .45 that's trying to shoot 22lr but I usually get about 5 duds per 100 rounds with my 522.   ???

Most of the time I can get rounds to go bang the second time around but when I brought it up to the guys at Magnum, they said that the ammo failure I was getting was par for the course.  Either way I'll pay more attention during the Range Day on Saturday, could be I'm exaggerating the failures in my own head.

I could be a firing pin issue.  Maybe worn or too short a pin?  Light strike?  incorrect headspace? You should have  a smith check it out.
That would be unacceptable to me, and it could be a safety issue as well.

With minimags, I'd expect much better reliability. That's semi-premium ammo in the .22 world. It could also be that your gun doesn't like minimags or, like Heavies said, a kit issue.

On a side note, I've had excelent results with CCI Blazer over any of the bulk packs I've tried. It worked in my mkII where others FTE'd. Everything works in my 10/22 though :D

I agree. The only problem I have had with .22lr is the gun I was shooting them out of. Occasional light strikes.

I did buy the American Eagle (Federal Red Box) .22lr and it is JUNK! I thought it was just me. But 6 months later I am telling a guy at the range how bad these rounds were and he pulled a box of them out of his range bag and told me he was having the same problems. First they make a weird noise when they go off. Not the typical bang one would expect. They smell different. Obviously they are using a different type of powder. But the weird part is they don't shoot accurately or consistently. My normally accurate Marlin Model 60 could not place them within a foot of where I was aiming. But the worst part is if they were low and to the left one round, they would hit high the next round. Also, smoke would come out of the feeding tube area when I shot these with this rifle. So I put them in my pistol. And again, weird sound, weird smell and couldn't hit a thing with them. BTW, he bought the box from the same gun store I did. Maybe a bad lot?

+1 on the CCI Blazers! For inexpensive ammo they even package them nicely with the plastic holder and not bulk packed like some others. My Marlin Model 60 loves them and is basically all I shoot out of it now. Accurate and consistent and inexpensive.

There's your answer...

Buy a better 22 caliber gun.

I've got CCI Blazer, and same thing -- malfunction every other magazine.  This has been using a SIG conversion, a glock conversion, and the Walther P22.

I've said for a few months now:  If you need to train on malfunctions, go shooting with your .22.

You guys got me paranoid so I shot a box of minimags through my 522 today.  No malfunctions.  *Shrugs*

The funny thing is even if my rifle is a lemon, I don't mind since it give me plenty of practice for malfunction drills.  I got the rifle to help me practice my fundamentals so any training is good training.

If any training is good training, go slap a Samoan in the face then train on your cardio, running like hell.
