OK I don't know if this has been discussed here but this is my thinking.

Whether or not you like Trump, you need to get him nominated.

The reason is this: If Trump is not the GOP nominee, he will run independent.

Then the conservative vote will be totally diluted between Trump, maybe Cruz, and all the other conservatives (not just Republican, includes Libertarian Party etc).

All this will dilute the conservative vote and give Hillary the presidency!!!

Bernie Sander is not likely to go independent if he is not the Democratic nominee.

If Hillary wins the nomination (almost certain) then pretty much every liberal is going to support her.

We need every conservative vote to be for Trump, whether we actually like him that much or not.

You can bet a Hillary presidency will see us with mandatory gun buybacks and other such stuff.

You are probably right. 

I could possibly conceive of voting for Trump in the general election if he were the republican nominee as it might be the only chance to defeat Clinton but I will not be held hostage by Trump's threats he might go independent.

I don't think he will go independent though, he knows his chances are tiny to run as third party because of the split vote between him and the conservatives. I do like the idea of 3rd parties gaining legitimacy though.

And it is not almost certain Clinton will get the nomination. Bernie still has quite a decent chance.

I wonder how many voters he would really take away from a republican candidate though. I am sure he would lose some, but how much. It would certainly put the republican candidate a two front mode to fight against a democrat and steal back as many voters from Trump as possible.

Of course who is voting for Tump in the general election likely matters on who the democratic candidate is. I wonder if Trump could steal more or fewer voters from a democrat ticket depending on whether it was Sanders or Clinton.

If nothing else, this race is very interesting in terms of seeing what styles and positions might affect the voters. Will an honest democratic socialist give more votes to Trump or take them away when compared to a lying but slightly more centered democrat?

We need to get the word out to our friends in HI and other states immediately. Even if they voted already in other states, they may have friends who have not yet.

Forcing the hand by getting him nominated for the GOP will close off that option, and it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Trump has such powerful populism support, I think that he would go independent either because he is a Shillary Plant, or he is arrogant enough to try for it.

This would especially be if he ended up losing neck to neck against Cruz. Right now he has a decent lead, but not as big a lead as Shillary versus Sanders.

That will effectively bring about a legitimate third party. I don't think he would run against the nominee this election, but I believe he would in the next. It's obvious the GOP's base has had enough of their bs. If they continue on their present path the party will die, and Hillary will be the next POTUS.

If Trump were going to run as a third party I think he would have to change up his game a little. He would have to start with different positions knowing that he would have to steal votes from both sides, not just the republicans. He could still be a loud mouth but his positions would be more temperate.

Trump was for the original assault weapons ban and while he has had a modern conversion I don't know if it is legitimate or merely a pander for votes .... I am on the fence between the 3 trump Cruz rubio and wanting rubio personally but I don't think he has a chance. Love Cruz on gun rights but I believe if he gets elected it will be 4 -8 years of gridlock even if the Senate and house stay with the Republicans. And trump I think his real politics would be closers to Bloomberg.... God I hope I am wrong but thats what I believe based on his past interviews and his views in his books.

Agreed.  Anyone who runs with Chuck Schumer is an enemy of freedom as far as I'm concerned. That includes the tape player "foolio".

I wonder who Trump will pick as a running mate. It might make a huge difference. Carson would make sense on many levels but I am not sure if Carson would be willing to work with Trump.

the GOP is a dying party clinging to some very obtuse ideas, Trump's popularity only shows proof of that. It's past time people own up to failed policies and terrible platforms that have no business with anything that concerns a nation that is supposedly based on the principles of freedom and liberty.

The problem is that nobody really knows where Trump stands. He's proven he'll say anything and is capable to floating to both sides of any given issue depending on which way the wind is blowing. I think a lot of his followers are going to be sorely disappointed, and that might lead to the rise of some truly terrifying future candidates when the rage factor kicks in. On the other hand both parties are on the ropes right now as the electorate has clearly given up on them, and that's a good thing in itself. It would be very cool if the next time around we get more than two and a half choices. America has a lot more facets to it than "A, B, or Other".
