As I read it,Chris was injured by shrapnel from a 9 mm rifle failure fired by the guy next to him:grrr:
If true, what type/brand rifle (semi auto I assume)

Reload ?
Hangfire squib ?
Squib ?
Excessively dirty ?
“Catastrophic” rifle failure is usually due to one of the above.

Get well Chris !  :shaka:

I was not there. So I can only repeat what I was told.

Brand new gun. I believe an AR style. First shot seemed ok. Second shot (I believe - My opinion only) fired out of battery. I heard that they found pieces of brass from both rounds in the gun. There was also another opinion that a piece of casing from the first round became lodged in the chamber/barrel and the second shot was fired in this condition. Might have fired in or out of battery. Which might also support the claim of finding the brass from both rounds.

My opinion: It sounded like the first round blew up in the gun. The shooter didn't realize it. Second round blew back? I had a 9mm AR at one time and I got rid of it because it would fire out of battery quite often. This was due to the design.

Again, I was not there and what I repeated came from my friends that were there plus my opinion based on what I was told.

Another update I heard was the shrapnel also punctured his spleen so they will be removing Chris's spleen. I don't know if the kidney can be saved or not yet. But since it was an arterial wound they had to go in right away to stop the bleeding.
From your earlier post and this one, it sounded pretty darn serious.  However, one article that I read (I don't recall the source) mentioned something like "non life threatening injuries".  Many times, they rush to be first to report stuff that they get all sorts of stuff wrong, speculate, etc.  To have potential to lose a kidney seems pretty damn serious.  Non life threatening injuries are bumps and bruises and some stiches, but not where organs need to be removed.

In any case, hope that he's well on the road to recovery and one of those things where one day, he's telling this story and showing off scars.  Best wishes to Chris!

9mm AR's are blowback operated.  If everything isn't right the chamber pressure on opening could be too high.  9mm shouldn't be in a blowback anything, IMO.

I just spoke with Chris a few minutes ago. He is still in ICU, sedated a bit and under pain meds. They took out his spleen and sewed up the artery that was sliced. I didn't hear anymore about the kidney so I assume that it was a non issue or the report I heard about the kidney was wrong. He should be moved out of ICU later today with a total stay of 3-4 days.

I would say that is pretty darn serious.

I have not been following this in the news as the news disgusts me. But I did hear from a friend that one source said Chris was shot by the other person while another source said he shot himself.

Good to hear that he's slated to get out of ICU today.  That's a big step forward.  Yeah, while his injuries technically may be "non life threatening", removal of spleen and sliced artery are life threatening to me, especially with a stint in the ICU.

I think I read an article that either said that the incident was a gunshot wound or alluded to a gunshot wound.  If I had read that first (before your post), my mind would've envisioned an ND or other incident where someone was actually shot, being struck with a bullet.

No mention of the fella that was shooting the gun as well.  Hope he is ok.  Can't imagine having a gun blow up in my face!

Based upon your opinion based upon your belief based  upon hearsay, which my opinion is based upon cuz I wasn't there either plus my sister's uncle-in-laws wife's nephew who got to second base with my wife opinion is......  +P.
Where did the rifle "break" (ejection port, barrel, top side) ?

Not that they're ever very accurate, but the news reported it as self inflicted.

I'm sure Inspector would tell us if he knew more. I'm also sure that he'll let us know what really happened as soon as it's a more appropriate time to ask his friend about it.

Right now I think we should be concentrating on sending him our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. Another wake up call for all of us to never take anything for granted and to always handle a firearm with the up most respect, safety and like it was the first time........

... always handle a firearm with the up most respect
up most (INCORRECT)
utmost (CORRECT)

Other than that, I agree!

I spoke with Chris last night and he is expecting to be released either today or tomorrow. He is also expecting to be back at his bench on Sunday shooting some .22 or other light shooting rifles.

He doesn't know what really happened as he didn't really know he had been hit since he was in no pain. I guess the bleeding was the give away.

Anyway, just glad to have my friend back at the bench next to me on Sundays. I have already lost two childhood friends in the last 6 months. I am glad I didn't lose him.

That's super.  Great he's getting right back in there, and hope he continues an uneventful recovery.

Finally got the word about a possible cause. I got this directly from my friend who arrived at the scene right after the incident happened. There was shrapnel in the magazine as well as whatever came out of the ejection port that hit Chris. Also heard that the range officer was telling people there was an obstruction in the barrel. That would explain the cause of the failure.
