For me at least, it means the same. But consequences are fine, it just depends what they are and who they are from. In my opinion, if there are no-holds-barred consequences from anything other than a government source, that's not good enough protection of free speech. No-holds-barred consequences from individuals (chastize Kaepernick, don't buy tickets) is fine. No-holds-barred consequences from large companies (NFL fine or firing) is something I think our country should re-examine.
Also, we as individuals need to know that our criticism of Kaepernick has weight. If everyone spoke against him, and he had no supporters at all, he very well could be deported/exiled/executed for this very action. Even though it seems like that violates due process, as I illustrated via case example our law system can be unfair, unforgiving, and inconsistent.
