I saw some where that they were going to come down on people with c&r because of abuse of the license $5,000 fine. I guess people were using it to buy modern firearms.

You can't do that because all sellers know what is CR Eligiable.  The ATF loves to take CR licenses away.

kinda like the FAA. They love to give you the license, but they try to take it away from you every which way the can.

The only way you could abuse a C&R is buying lots of C&R eligible guns "for your collection" then turning around and selling them off.  While it is legal for you to sell guns you acquired with a C&R, it's not legal to make a business out of it.  I can, for example, order 25 Yugo SKS rifles direct from an importer, perfectly legally.  I can keep them, love them, and maybe eventually sell them off one at a time over a few years, still legally.  I can't turn around and set up a booth at the gun show with 24 Yugos for sale.

I do believe that the radical and crazy notion that the Founders meant what they said, is gradually soaking through the judicial system.

<speculation>
I heard a while back that the BATFE was pretty much self-sufficient from a budget standpoint because of licensing fees and fines and whatnot.  I wonder if that's part of it, at $5000 per revocation.

Sounds vaguely racket-like to me.  The BATFE giveth and the BATFE taketh away --and charges you five big ones each pop.

The FCC is doing this.  They're suffering budget cuts from the federal government, and have realized that stepping up enforcement of previously-overlooked violations means generation of a huge revenue stream.  It is currently nearly unheard-of for a station to make it thru license renewal without hefty fines.  No reason to think that the BATFE wouldn't come to the same realization.

Not only are the fines big, but they usually accrue to each violation, and in some cases, each day the problem is not corrected is another violation.  That can add up to pretty big numbers.

I think maybe the EPA pulls this kind of stuff, too.  Piss in the river from 11:59PM to 12:01AM and it's two violations....  :)

I pulled that post because I wasn't sure it was actually self-sufficient in budgetary terms.  First of all, its budget is over a billion of our dollars a year, but it turns out that the fines 'n stuff go into the general fund, so I guess all you can say is that that billion bucks (of our money) is offset by fines 'n stuff.

In any case, I guess it goes like this:  Make more laws to violate, you get more violators.  Get more violators, you get more fines 'n stuff.

Does that sound sort of like a speed trap to you, too?

ETGLAOFBOTA (Edited To Grumble Like An Old Fart But Off Topic Anyhow):  I remember when Eisenhower's budget hit something like $73 billion, and holy cow, all kinds of hell was raised.  Well, as somebody once said about the US budget, "A billion dollars here and a billion dollars there, and pretty soon you're talking about real money."  Senator Dirksen?  Senator Goldwater?  I forget.  But the point was well made.

Copy 1 gets mailed in with the certification of compliance and your $30
Copy 2 goes to the chief law enforcement officer.

Then you wait the 4-8 weeks.

Anyone know which type of FFL you need to purchase silencers and how hard is it to get approved?
