It was a Pit Bull.  No surprise it was aggressive.

Owner should have used a better leash.  That is what instigated the shooting.  Somebody didn't want to pay $15 for a good, strong leash.  Now their pet is dead.

A Pit Bull can kill or maim a man.  It's an animal.  The threat is in the eye of the one being attacked.  Shoot or don't shoot -- 100% the rent-a-cop's call.

It's true. As a safety professional, I investigate a lot of dog bites with clients who visit customer houses. Pit bulls were bred to kill prey. Their massive jaws can crush bone in an instant. What I want to know is how close was the guard to the girl when the guard shot the dog?

The family said they plan to take legal action.

Another Hawaii LOTTO winner!

I'm sure by the time the family makes a formal deposition, the distance between dog and owner will be less than 5 feet!

I guess it's settled now, gun trumps a big dog.

It's a good shoot.  I can't fault the guard because I'd be afraid as it's a big dog and you don't know how the dog was raised and it's demeanor.  Dog's family is to blame.

The security guard must have some good gun handling skills, able to draw and put a shot in it's head quickly under pressure.  Sometimes law enforcement officers work as part-time security guards.

I read the KHON version of the story which has more details.  Could be the family caused problems or the security guard was a prick.

As much as I hate hearing about pets being killed by LE (who often are not even at the correct address!), this was at an airport.  Bad things happen.  If/when it does, would you rather it happen with a Pit Bull or a smaller, less destructive breed?

I'm curious how much effort it took for that dog to break free.  I'm also curious if the guard somehow startled the dog or was approaching quickly, and the dog felt his owners were threatened?

Doesn't matter, but it might explain why a dog taking a leak suddenly "lunged" at a total stranger.

Its pathetic how they spent the opening 8-9 minutes of the news the last two nights to showcase the family sobbing and talking about how good the dog was. Of course they use the usual pics of the dog as a puppy or of the dog sleeping next to an infant.
The comment section of the various news networks has the usual knee jerk reactions and lack of commom sense. Most of them seem to want guns to be banned from the airport.  ???

There's more...

A private security officer who shot a pet dog in the head in front of its owner at Honolulu Airport Tuesday night is being investigated for reckless endangering in the second degree and was previously fired as a civilian police officer for the Army “for pulling a gun too much,” according to state Sen. Will Espero.

The facts (stories) have been trickling out every day.

They were loading in a "no stopping" zone.  One person said it was the Drive-Thru drop-off lane for Hawaiian.

The guard approached the male member of the group, and they were having "words."  One described it as a "verbal altercation."

The dog was on a CHAIN, not being restrained by any person.  No idea what the other end of the chain was attached to.

Wish there was video.  One day, anyone working LE and/or carrying a pistol will be required to have a bodycam -- assuming the police union every stops blocking it!   :wtf:

I don't think that matters.
The media played well on this one - showing a crying mom holding her baby.
They dog could have been pissing on someone's grave and it wouldn't matter.

What a shame.....rent-a-cops with a gun. Doesn't surprise me at all....

This evening's news said a lot of these Securitas armed guards are former LEOs that got fired from their jobs and cannot get another LEO job.  They are allowed to carry guns but do not have arrest powers according to the news media.

Although a pit bull does have a very powerful bite, it only ranks number 8 of the top 10 in bite force.  The pits bite force is only 71% of a Rottweiler which ranks #4.  Number 1 is the Kangal which has a staggering 743 lbs per sq inch of power.  More than twice that of a Rottweiler.   Pit bulls were originally breed to be people friendly and aggressive to other animals.  They can be the most loving dog around and great with kids if raised properly.  I owned Pit bulls for many years and raised my kids with them.  I have had Rottweilers for the past 10 years and to me, Rotties are more aggressive.

From a source. News beef it up for the owner of the dog. They believed it was a good shoot. The dog lunged for the officer. Won't know till the video and investigation are complete.

The news info relative to the Airport LEO get fired from other agencies crack me up. There are alots of great former and current LEO working part time there.

Can the situation happens without a dog getting kill, yes in my opinion. But I was not there.
