5.11 Tactical Kilt Review

So if you haven't seen this product from 5.11, here is their video advertisement.

Yes, it is real and yes I bought one.

The back story, from what I have gathered, is that 5.11 made this as an april fools joke a few years back. Well when they returned to work there were thousands of orders to their surprise. So now they release it every year.

So here is my basic review. Disclaimer, I have never worn a kilt before so I cannot compare it to anything.
It is made of standard ripstop style fabric so that is what it feels like. It closes with 4 snaps on the left and 4 on the right. Takes a little while to snap up but is very quick to remove. There is a 9th hidden snap half way down which keeps the the top flap from opening too much in case a nice breeze comes from just the right angle.  There are two regular pocket which are very roomy. You then have two removable cargo pockets each with magazine compartments.

The fit is nice. You can feel it when even a light breeze comes through which is nice because it cools off your junk. As you squat, run, jump, etc it doesn't hinder you at all. I bought a pair of boxer briefs in dry-fit style fabric and this is important otherwise your thighs may rub. I wore it once with regular briefs and walked about a mile without any problem but the boxer briefs are definitely preferable. I sort of bought it as a joke but have been wearing it every weekend.

You will get a few odd views from people. So far a few people asked me about it, including two ladies!

Oooh! Haven't tried that one yet. My wife said when I did a high kick everything was visible.

Sounds interesting,  however might present problems in the prone position...  Hawaii has some quite large centipedes..

One must weigh the benefits versus possible consequences.

It's called lavalava

I wouldn't mind trying one of those now though my skin color isn't the right color and I might be accused of cultural appropriation. I also don't have the abs or cool tattoos.

Though if they came out with a tactical lavalava I might just have to buy one.

Here is mine by the way. I liked the camp but I figured the grey is more fitting if I wear it to a moral formal setting.

I have four of them. It's my default around-the-house wear since we don't have air conditioning. The black one is for formal occasions and the camo is for dirty jobs, and the tan and olive are mostly for chill. At first it feels a little goofy and you get some teasing about wearing a dress but say goodbye to sweaty twig n' berries. If you are worried about accidentally exposing yourself then moisture wicking underwear still allows the breezy feeling.

I wish there was a tactical tupenu that was a little longer with no pleats and maybe a hidden pocket or two, but the shorter TDK is a much more functional design for working. Except for the external pockets which want to catch on EVERYTHING.

If I was doing jungle work I'd definitely want pants, though, since in my experience muddy flaps trap microscopic rocks and rub them against your tender parts like sand paper. That and the whole centipede thing.
I’m becoming clinically undepressed and thinking about beginning it all.

I always thought "kilt" was the past tense of "kill."

As in:  I just kilt me a deer.
