Also the most volatile. So I told my wife if I hear some stuff going on from our neighbors, i will call 911, but other than that, mind my own damn business. I'm not trained to handle DV situations.
Sometimes there are those who are truly abused and get saved because the neighbors call 911 and police take the necessary action.
If you look at the abuse law, it was written to protect those who are truly abused, who are psychologically defeated and aren't able to save themselves from controlling abusive spouses. The intentions are all well and good but in reality it seems most abuse cases aren't that situation. Most cases seem to be spouses or bf/gf who have relationship problems and an argument goes too far. They often both hit each other but one does it harder (the man usually) or one takes the step to report it (the woman usually). These aren't really situations where the victim cannot stand up for themselves and the court has to take the place. They aren't situations where someone needs to get arrested and have a criminal record necessarily. Maybe personal or couples counseling.
So you have these more strict domestic violence laws and force police to enforce them, of course you are going to see more cases. They passed this new update to the law where it is a felony if someone under 14 can see or hear the abuse incident. They passed it because studies have shown that there is measurable harm to children who witness their parents being violent so their intentions were good but the law itself is poorly written. So mom and dad get into an argument, dad pushes mom away because she is in his face, mom falls and complains of pain to her body from the fall, their kid is in the next room, and now the dad gets a felony. Think this is appropriate? Cops don't want to be to blame so they aren't going to make a judgement call and arrest whenever there is a technical violation. On top of that, the way they wrote the law, technically if two brothers fight and the third is there to witness it, bam, felony abuse arrest.
