Ammo Test - Advantage Arms .22LR Conversion Kit (Glock 19, Gen4) (Read 43522 times)

GlockNewb

Shot in mid June-2017 at KHSC silhouette range. Got the conversion kit from KGS to self-train and practice fundamentals cheaply with future designs to bring up new shooters on as Glock-ish a platform as I can. If you're in the market for a solid .22lr conversion kit, Advantage Arms does a solid one.

Conclusions:
 - my new nickname is Twitchy McTwitchface and I shall work diligently to graduate from that name
 - this kit almost REQUIRES high-velocity copper-plated ammo - 1200FPS minimum
 - if you can afford the extra $100-$200, a dedicated .22lr pistol is definitely preferable for the variety of ammo brands it should be able to shoot reliably (#rapback)

Twitchy,
Are the failures a condemnation of the bullet brand or the kit?

I haven't been around firearms long enough to truly "condemn" anything, but it really does seem like premium ammo is necessary to run the kit reliably. The only other opinions I have relative to ammo quality are my experiences with my 10/22, which has shot everything I used in testing and ran like a champ.

I have a crappy 1911-22 with scope that I shoot at the rifle range to fill time before the round ends. It's constantly jamming but haven't gotten around to replacing it yet. I've been trying to figure out which ammo works best so I appreciate your video. Someday I'll get a Ruger 22. I'm waiting for someone to sell me theirs for a ridiculously low price.

I had trouble with automatch and american eagle in my kit at the beginning.  After 500 rounds or so the gun broke in and fires them fine now.  Blazers and minimags worked fine from the start.

Thanks, that's re-assuring. Automatch has always been my go-to for price/round vs. reliability, and I'm still working through a pair of AE bricks I bought last year :P. Current round count post-test is almost 500, so I'd like to re-visit the less successful rounds in the future.

But when I can get Blazers for $2.50/box...

You did see my nickname, right? ;P

I didn't realize I had that habit until I reviewed the footage myself, I will be working on that in future range sessions.

When Obama went hiking up the trail years ago, did they close the range for the day?

Better here than on YouTube :P. Any constructive criticism on these forums is absolutely welcome, and thank you for that. I KNOW I am a new shooter and I have much to learn, especially fundamentals. Thanks again for the observations  :shaka:

of course I saw your nickname
It's good you have a sense of humor. You need it nowadays.
I did not notice the unsafe handling practice that macsak did but it could be that I was falling asleep after about 5minutes.
BTW, I'll be at the range tomorrow and I have a standing offer to help novice pistol shooters with problems such as yours.
In the past I've coached people out of their flinch within 15 minutes.

Something that I learned in high school....the attention span of an audience is approx. 9 minutes.
If you have to create a presentation, be it video or public speaking, keep it under 9 minutes.
If you have too much material to display then you have to create a break somehow.
In public speaking you can do this by engaging the audience with a question and answer period.
What, Me Worry?

I agree with the public speaking dictum. I also appreciate YT videos that test out several different brands in one video. I find this less annoying than Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, etc.

I'll look for ya at the pistol range, especially if the rifle has a waiting list.

First long-term session with this .22lr platform, first firearms video, first time editing...lots of firsts on this video :P As for the observations, you can imagine how many things were going through my head relative to filming the test...no excuses for unsafe handling protocols, just more things to improve for future range sessions.

As for the video, I admit it's drier than Ewa Beach at noon in July, but the original inspiration came from YouTuber dleada and like his video, I put up raw test footage and data, nothing more...although I hope you enjoyed your nap :P

Camera: iPhone 6 (would rather buy ammo than a camera)
Editing: VSDC (freeware) on a PC (again...ammo)

Thanks for not shooting vertical video on the phone.
I'm amazed at people not realizing they have a high definition video camera in their phone.

You can load 10 rounds on the silly side...  unless something has changed that I don't know about.  Like the vid, long but I like shooting guns and watching guns get shot..   Yeah,  finger off the trigger when not on target and ready to fire.  I hard index on the frame whenever I'm not shooting.  Good habit to get into rifle or pistol.

I am not a great pistol shooter FWIW..

I thought the range maximum for the whole public side was 5 rounds per mag, at least that's what I remember on the silly side sign sitting 'side the shed

I kinda-ish get the incentive though...wouldn't want to scare HPD into thinking responsible gun enthusiasts would do aaaaanything that would risk public safety...that's what the mag limit's for, right? Public safety? Because law-abiding citizens are more dangerous than criminals? :D
