No they do not tell you until you are in the courtroom doing jury selection. 

Unfortunately every time I go to jury duty I get thrown out because Im a physician.  I think the attorneys worry that I will influence the other jurors so they dismiss me.   Last case was someone busted for "allegedly"  selling meth.  The defense attorney asked me if I know how meth effects people and I said yes and they sent me home on the spot before the trial started. 

But I keep going.  I hope to be called for some stupid firearm law that clearly is unconstitutional.  Like Hawaii requiring physician clearance for purchasing a firearm.   as a physician in Hawaii, I literally can call the police on any patient and have their firearm license revoked for any reason I see fit.  When I started working here I called the firearm enforcement division to see what my responsibilities were.  no due process.   Total BS.   The second amendment does not say anything about doctor clearance to own a firearm. 

So use your power as a juror.  Same as the president gets to pardon someone.  we can decide if a law is unjust or unconstitutional and refuse to send someone to jail.   (just dont say jury nullification.  the judges and attorneys dont want anyone to know about that)

still going to go.  Im not an emergency doc and I have partners to cover a day at Jury duty.  Like I said, if Im on the other end of that jury, I'd want a peer in the jury

Since there is one here, do doctors automatically get a questionnaire if I purchase a firearm? For all my previous purchases I wrote "no doctor" as I indeed had not gone to see a doctor in a long time (I get sick a lot, I just don't bother going to the doctor).

However I went once more recently and the doctor wanted me to call HMSA and officially add them as my personal physician or something. I debated whether or not I should do it, but I did. Does this mean I have to write their name on the permit form now? Can I, like, disavow them or something and go to a different physician next time, or add them back later?

But your doctor can call the firearm department at any time and say "I dont think this person should have firearms" and the police will flag the license and deny renewal  (what I was told by the person working my local firearms enforcement at the police station.

In Calif, they use the voter registration roles.  I think Hawaii uses something else, as  I wes not registered here first time I got a summons (McCain).  Tax records, maybe?

Hawaii previously used voter registration, but now uses driver license records since so many people here don't vote.

i got a letter too but didn't look really official. though if it was real id have to sign for it or something. thought it might be some weird identity theft scam. tried to look online what the letter looks like, no luck. whats the return addy on your letters?

These are not sent with signature receipt.  So, no, you would not be required to sign for it.

There's a short questionnaire to give you the chance to claim an exemption if you think you're entitled to be excused from jury duty.  Not filling out the form isn't going to automatically stop you from being added to the pool.

If you thought it was a scam, did you try to call the court to find out?  You can look up the phone number online and see if it matches the numbers in the letter.

I've been called three times since I moved here. Once the case was settled before the selection process; the other two times, I served as a juror. While I admit that the selection process doesn't seem very random, and the timing is rarely convenient, it really irks me to hear people complain about jury duty, or to discuss strategies for not getting selected. And on a forum dedicated to the support of the US Constitution? My sympathy meter is at 0% and trying to go lower.

I agree with you Tom, on this being ones civic duty.  However, I can also sympathize on why many don't want to do it, especially in Hawaii's economy.   If one has bills to pay, and is not blessed with a job that will absorb that, one could be in dire straits if having to spend days, weeks, months(?) in the courtroom. 

I have been called, have served, did my duty.  Luckily I've been blessed with a job that allows that.  Still waiting to be called again, but I have that luxury and blessing, i couldn't fault those who do not.  It's hard...

I too hope to someday be on that 'place to keep' jury where someone did some good.  That would be awesome. Sadly during a retrial, because of the hung jury, that poor person would probably be done a number on... 

My work paid me fully for jury duty, but for many other jurors, they were out of work without pay for the time that they served.  A few were on their only days off and only time to see their kids.  I truly felt for those folks.  The trial that I was on was expected to be super short, so the judge did give somewhat of a lecture on those who would try to get out on BS excuses. 

The bailiff was a friend of a friend and she told me that this judge's next trial was a murder trial.  Just the jury selection alone was expected to last weeks. A coworker was in the jury pool for the Deedy trial.  He was out of the office a bunch.  While I agree about the civic duty part, I can see how a trial like that and being out of work for that long is a true hardship.
