Interesting but nothing we can do about it. It can't be made illegal and the minute facebook decided to not participate, someone would take their place.

I also read chance of suicide goes up significantly when people check social media more than 5 hours a day. It's good we are finally having this conversation. Humans are social animals and this form of interaction is actually anti-social.

just don't have a FB
easy
you are responsible for your own feelings and you have a choice. Unless someone has a knife to your throat no one makes you do anything.

I'm concerned about the high schoolers and jr high. With all the peer pressure and constant updates it's almost like having a knife to their throats. Very glad I grew up when I did because HS sucked enough without cyber bullying or the temptation to do something really stupid that would create permanent evidence.

This is very true.  I have friends who like to post political stuff and alienate others who don't share their views. As in use the phrase "I will be removing you from my friends".

This is why on my FB, i don't post politics, religion, etc.. I also try not to get involved with to many discussions because it just goes in circles.  I try and keep an open mind and just state facts, not opinions.

I remember the days when social media was used to express your lifestyle, as in pics of what you're doing or jokes.

I feel social media tried to influence the election, not Russia.  Because 99% of the things about the election were anti-Trump.  So Mueller should investigate FB instead.

Also I think cyber bullying is stupid. All you have to do is either change your FB settings to private, or delete your account.  It's not that hard.  Kids are growing up weak these days.

But when someone talked bad about you in school, a limited number of kids were told.  Now, every one of your followers/friends online sees everything others post.  So, one bully can broadcast to your whole universe of family, friends, and acquaintances before you can block them.

Once the information is out there, the damage is done.  The worst is an ex-boy/girl friend.  They may have intimate knowledge or photos that can embarrass you on a level that's hard to deal with.

When was the last time you walked into a classroom knowing it's 99% possible that everyone there, including the teacher, now knows a secret you shared in confidence with a friend?

The solution seems fairly simple for parents. Get their kids dumb phones with no internet capabilities and restrict their access to social media while at home.

Define "their kids."  The kids being bullied?  The kids doing the bullying?  All the kids in school?  Which kids are you suggesting need "dumb" phones with absolutely no WiFi or Internet?  Which kids need to be restricted on Social Media.

I'm asking since you said "their" which didn't include the entire universe of kids at any particular grade levels, classes or families.

I personally think it is up to the parents. Parents need to be part of their kids life and restrict or allow activities based on how those activities are affecting their children.

So, instead of teaching kids how to deal with bullies, you think parents should punish their kids by taking away their smartphones and restrict Internet usage to only when parents are supervising them?

Depending on the age of the kid, not only is that kind of parenting going to create weak adults and alienate them from you for being unreasonable in their eyes, you are also ignoring the truth -- that kids find ways to do what they want regardless of how strict you try to be.

And how would you know if your child is "affected" unless they tell you?  Viewing your kid's posts online by friending them in SM is one way to see what they see and how they react.  Kids don't tell parents everything.

You don't just "teach kids to deal with bullies" and expect it to solve the problem. You can try to raise your kids to be emotionally strong but you can never ensure that things like bullying won't cause emotional stress for your children. There are very few people who are immune from social stresses.

As a parent your job is to raise and protect your children. Keeping them out of a bad crowd isn't punishing them, it is being a good parent, and if facebook is a source of the problem then you restrict facebook. If their friends are drinking alcohol and being a bad influence then you stop your kid from hanging out with them, you don't develop their alcohol tolerance.

You are right, a teenage kid will often try to filter out such difficulties from their parents. No single approach is going to solve the issue of bullying but a parent who takes an active role is going to make more of a difference.

You can tell as the troll tells YOU how you should be a parent and how you would fail if you don't.

So someone makes an articulated argument that disagrees with you all you manage to do is claim I am a troll? Sounds like you just can't defend your position.

He's back here fishing again.  Trying to use the "I guess you don't have an answer, so you call me a troll" line -- as usual.

He either needs to stop trolling or he needs to get a lot more interesting.  Same tired troll lines are getting really old.

Fishing? To what end? What is my goal here, do tell oh wise one. I disagree and you call me a troll? You want this to be some homogenous group where no one disagrees with your opinion?

Your arguments are empty then you try to turn the tables on my to hide your own inadequacies. Stop being such a snowflake.

I will also point out that you in fact didn't have an answer. So yes, it is my usual line but it is your usual MO so if the line fits, I will use it on you.
