I enjoyed both and I too like the original better.  However, the recent one does incorporate things more relevant to current events.  Realistic?  Maybe, maybe not, but more than back in the early 80s.  The recent one had better optics on their rifles.   

The firearm registration thing was in the original Red Dawn.  Where that Cuban officer said to look up the Form 4473 (or whatever) I don't recall it coming up in the recent version.

I remember watching the new gen reboot of Red Dawn. I wore my Wolverines shirt. At the end I was disappointed. The original RD was gritty and felt more raw.

While I always wanted an AK, I have to admit that Red Dawn did increase my interest in owning an AK.  Any reason that is for getting a new gun is a good reason.  Haha

That scenario could potentially happen, if we were living in the 20th century, with the US fighting in a war with a military peer.

IMO, assuming no use of nuclear weapons, a war between military peers in the 21st century will begin with economic embargoes, tariffs, sanctions, and etc. to weaken the military financial base of the opponent, then fought with missiles and probably EMP type weapons to neutralize military and civilian infrastructure.  The resulting SHTF situation and widespread starvation, disease, rapes, murders, and killings on the streets would do sufficent damage, compelling the government to bring a quick end to the war.

The use of ground troops would be used by the victor in the end to quell or intimidate the small pockets of unarmed/armed resistance and serve as an occupying force, as currently seen with US military forces illegally occupying Syria and Hawaii.
